Wa-hey! Congratulations to Lewis for winning SPOTY. The surprise winner, the BBC even posted that McIllroy had won on their website Golf? Call that a sport?! All they do is walk round and round a field with a stick and a tiny ball
I'm a bit surprised to be honest, but it's probably intended to make up for the fact he was runner-up in 2007 and 2008. Oh to be a fly on the wall of Kyle's bedroom right now...
It's nice that he's recognized for his achievements, but looking at some of the responses online, I'm really surprised that people actually give a crap. At the end of the day, it doesn't mean a whole lot.
Huh. In which case I apologise for slandering his achievement. (That said, remember this is the same competition that awarded a prize for "best personality" to... Ryan Giggs)
Yes, it rather kills off the idea that people don't like Lewis. I have heard some negative stuff that his achievement is dwarfed by McIlroy's but 11 grands prix in a season and becoming the most successful British grand prix winner along with double world champion seems impressive enough to me. So I'm very pleased for Lewis myself although my next phone bill will probably bankrupt me.
Congrats Lewis but the BBC did hype him more that the others during the show. It was like an Apollo Creed entrance in the Rocky movies.
Congratulations to the most successful British GP winner ever. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/sports-personality/30471654
Fairly comfortably by vote share too: Hamilton: 34% McIlroy: 20% Pavey: 16% BBC seemed surprised it wasn't McIlroy: please log in to view this image
It struck me as somewhere between Hollywood and X Factor but my guess is that each BBC department relative to the nominee's sport was charged with producing those VTs and the F1 department did it their way with a typical CGI overload. It's not Lewis's fault if the golf department lack imagination Then again, I'm not sure golf lends itself to caddies going up in flames and players barging each other off the green.
I was surprised Lewis won and more surprised when I saw the margin. Lewis has won over a lot of doubters this year though and if SPOTY seems like an irrelevance, it is perhaps testament to how Lewis's maturity has borne fruit and that people appreciate this; not that you'd know from some of the venom being spat on social media. One thing that struck me about this though is just how disparate the different disciplines are which all get bunched up together under the 'Sport' umbrella. It is probably unfair to compare Hamilton's and McIlory's achievements and evaluate one against the other in this way because there's almost nothing that they have in common.
im gonna share whats going through my head.... please log in to view this image VS please log in to view this image
