Not wishing to be pedantic, but he did say vintage and not original. McLaren teamed up with Marlboro around 1973/4, so vintage would be spot on. I can't see them going back to anything close to that colour scheme as it will give free sponsorship to Marlboro, Ron would never let that happen! Hopefully it will be a bit unique to really signify a new start for McLaren.
Very true, I'm glad you are paying attention, incidentally, one cannot be a "bit unique" Personally I quite liked the silver and red Vodaphone / Santander livery, seen up close the effects are impressive, not sure what Honda's colours are, maybe white with red spots !!.
I think they're original colours were white with a red stripe, but if they did that now they'd need to be sponsored by 118-118!
Forgive my possible ignorance but do we know who their title sponsor will be yet? Surely that will have some bearing on the livery.
Yeah, vintage rather than original was a deliberate wording, I'd equally love a return to an Orange livery, but I think Red and White is more likely based on the way Mclaren have been using their media coverage. It would be free sponsorship for Marlboro, but nowadays I think that livery evokes far more thoughts of Mclaren-Honda than it does Marlboro sponsorship. Lotus use the JPS livery without worrying about freebie sponsorship, though granted the size of the brands are now vastly different. Agree that the title sponsor will have an effect, but I could easily see Mclaren not having one again. Yellow SAP branding was more obvious towards the end of last season, which wouldn't work with the red and white livery.
I love that orange myself, it's quite particular and looks fantastic on the McLaren road cars, IMO, so I'd be very happy to see that return. But if Santander become their title sponsor, the Red and White "vintage" would make sense but it's just a paler tone of red than the Marlboro. As you can see above, I am now trying desperately not to sound ignorant. Oh, **** it, let's stay blissful
Seeing as Infiniti is a division of Nissan, that would seem odd. It only made sense for them to sponsor Red Bull as Nissan and Renault have some kind of special partnership.
Would love it if they were, Always had a soft spot for the Orange Arrows even, Orange on an F1 car just works. With Santander probably increasing their sponsorship now Alonso is back at McLaren (Wonder if Ferrari will lose it now?), i reckon they will either be white and red or go somewhere in the middle, white with a metallic orange in the exact same design as the Marlbro McLaren Hondas (minus the sponsor of course), putting a modern twist on the old livery with modern colours gives them plenty room in future without the traditionalists moaning and coming back with a heavily retro inspired design for their first year back together would be tremendous marketing. Certainly worked when Lotus came back with the JPS colours, McLaren/Honda is even bigger than that IMO.
Yum yum. That's going to be confusing if one of them is ever forcibly retired by the stewards though.
Absolutely perfect if true Think i saw a photo mock up of that somewhere (metallic orange) a few weeks ago and it looked awesome
