This is snobbish I know but it is also true. JWM and myself both come from working class backgrounds. The difference is that my house was filled with books and a father who was always ready to take the time to explain the complexities of life. I guess JWM just had a comparatively impoverished intellectual background and upbringing that has left him as that most contemptible of things,a working class Tory. He can't help it,although it does explain why his attempts at debate end in emoticons. It tells us a great deal about the guy that he thought his response was adequate. (He meant appropriate btw)
Im working class and proud to be so mate. I started with nothing and pulled myself up by my boot straps to go on achieve something in life. I've built a couple of good businesses that employ people and my children have all had a far better start in life than I could have impossibly imagined. I make no apologies for gaining my inspiration from Maggie back in the 80s where she championed self reliance, thrift, hard work and the desire to better your self. I certainly have and there are millions of my generation who have. I don't do the politics of envy and class warfare that you and your party seem to always indulge in. Oh and as you chosen to make this personal, my Dad died when I was just a young kid leaving my Mum to bring us up and having to rely on the State to support us. I have experienced real hardship and I wouldn't wish it on anyone but it made more determined to go on to succeed. People like you who claim to represent the most needy and who haven't experienced poverty themselves are the worst kind.
My dad was a motor mechanic and we lived in a rented house that we paid 7/6 a week for. I recall teachers telling the class that people used to wash in a tin bath in front of the fire,we still did. Just because I have a few bob now doesn't mean to say I need to move to the party whose motto is "I'm alright jack,pull up the ladder".

I'm a bit surprised SN23. Your contributions on GC are amongst the most acerbic,not that I object,on the contrary I quite enjoy the cut and thrust of debate. If people feel slighted then they always have the option of dropping out.

You made that assumption SN23. I had no knowledge of JWM's home situation.What I do know however is that I was extremely lucky in being the beneficiary of such a parent,an intelligent,kind but not educated man.My father had faults,chief amongst them thinking well of people,I always joked that he thought Hitler was kind to animals. What does irk me is that people like JWM who consider that they have done well (And I agree that he has) then want to put the boot in on those beneath them. I had a lot of luck, I bought a comparatively expensive house at 24 years old that I could barely afford and it doubled in value in three years. I then used the equity to build a successful business.Had I done that ten years later I would most likely have ended up living in a cardboard box,That certainly doesn't give me the right to kick those who have ended up like that.
