so after a few rumours that we may lose martin, there is a bit of positive news on the OS, stating that Martin has signed a new deal until 2014. so with this new deal do people believe we should start to break him in to the 1st team this season, keep him as a backup, or maybe send him out on loan?
To me that is definite good news.......If we are bringing in another CB Then let him go out on loan. Am I not right that Bournemouth have asked to loan him? If we are not bringing in another centre back then he will have to be Satisfied with the Odd game. For me I think the loan period would make him.
Play him! Seaborne is a waste of space and Jaidi will only be a half bit player this season. Unless NA is aiming to bring in another CB, he is the best option we have.
A lot of people (myself included) on this forum would have listed a centre back as one of transfer priorities, but the accepted bids and rumors have been for Midfielders and strikers. I think this deal proves that Martin is going to be given a bigger influence on the team and may well have leap frogged Seabourne as 1st back up. I would want to keep him here and give him games in a saints shirt so he is familiar with our tactics and style of play. This is the clubs philosphy.. Youth, U21, 1st team and Martin is going to be given that chance. I think he has done well from his brief appearances so far and deserves it.
im with you on this - especially if you read NA's update on the OS too - if they are placing importance on bringing through youth then this deal for Martin signals the fact that surely he may well get a few chances this year. maybe he will be tested quite a bit? i mean tbh if we see this as a consolidation year - which we can afford to - then what better year to let him bed in?
Good news. Don't understand the constantly slagging off of Dan Seaborne. Can recall Fonte & Jaidi making as many mistakes last season as Seaborne did. Never know, if people weren't so negative towards him, he may even play better. Radical I know and I appreciate we always have to have one player as the illogical whipping boy.
This is brilliant news, he is a fantastic player with a huge amount of potential, the good news keeps coming.
He needs a lot of help if is not going to be caught out in the championship, but I think he has a lot of potential
I have nothing against the lad and think he is an average player , who is perfect for backup. But I always feel more confident when I see Jaidi, Fonte or Martins name on the team sheet instead of his.
Good news; good prospect who may get more games this year. I have criticised Seaborne on here, but take on board CBK comment about giving him a break.
Lotta love for this guy. Through him in at the deep end ! Seems to have done more than enough the last times he played
Martin has been outstanding whenver he has played IMO, I think he's better and Seaborne and is a good prospect for now, great prospect for the future
i think this is a good thing for saints.. A experience veteran like fonte coaching martin shoulder to shoulder in a season of consolidation is brilliant!! i think the yr after will have a very good defensive partnership!
I'm very happy with this news, people are saying that he should've broken into the first team by now and be playing regularly, but 21 is still young for a defender and Jaidi's form kept him and Seaborne on the bench last season. He can only be learning from the experienced Fonte and Jaidi and his time will come either through injury or other players leaving/retiring. I think he has a big future and reminds of a young Mark Wright and this deal prooves that NA rates him as well.
Fonte said he liked playing alongside him, that's a pretty good recommendation I think. I can see him starting more games than Seaborne this season, and is potentially a better player so I'm pleased he's signed a new deal.
I understand your comments about the usual 'whipping boy'. Not sure if that is some people's logic behind their disapproval but I personally don't rate him. Not for his mistakes necessarily but rather the fact that he rarely finds a Saints shirt when 'passing' (long ball 90% of the time) out of defence. He's pretty good in the air and has an ok left foot. He gets beaten for pace as well which is surprising considering his stride. I did think him equal if not superior to Jaidi when he first arrived but then for me, Jaidi became a rock and did what he does best. Seaborne deserves the stick until he improves. And as for fan/crowd opinion of him, not yet have I heard him receive an unhelpful reception/reaction like Puncheon used to get before we all realised he was too big for his boots.
