Alright chaps Hoping some of you can put your mysterious animosity towards Sunderland fans away and help me out here, I've received an unconditional offer from Hull Uni and may well be going there next September so I was wondering if you could give me an (honest) insight into what Hull is like? Is it a good t̶o̶w̶n̶ city for students etc.? Cheers in advance
We've had a University for God knows how many years so all that entails is in place. Cheap accomodation, cheap drinks on students nights etc. You won't get mugged if that's a worry to you. By the way, 'Ull is a City not a town.
I've also applied (interview on the 21st January), but having lived in the area for most of my life, I can tell you that the area has a lot to offer. The nightlife is decent, if not a tad repetitive after a few months, but there's always something going on and if you're in it for a 3 year course, there's the city of culture in 2017 which I'm sure will bring a whole load of events and stuff. Student life is decent from what I can gather, but it depends on what kind of student you'll be. Our women range from incredibly fit, impressionable and stupid to alright but a bit fat and ugly. It's a real mix, you could arrange any of those adjectives and get some sort of result. So watch out there. Spiders for me was always where I enjoyed myself the most, but that's because I'm a bit of a metal head and that's the sort of thing that goes on there, that and cheap cocktails and lots of women in very little clothing. The other main clubs in Hull are Pozition (meh), Sugar Mill (for your Soccer AM watching, vine liking, banter fiends), Piper (a bit indie, but it's alright), Welly (filthy, sticky and the kind of place you'd expect to find Superhans from Peep Show lurking), Fuel (a decent club in itself, although it is a gay club, so if you're alright with that kind of thing, it's a decent night) and of course the Student's Union, which is a good if not unspectacular night out. It's what you make of it, there's plenty of decent bars and pubs to go to before you hit any of the clubs so aren't spoilt for choice in places to get pissed. Culturally there's the maritime museum, the art gallery, the Deep, the Streetlife Museum and a whole host of other places to visit, although as a student these things might not be high on your list. You are also just a stonesthrow away from the most beautiful countryside you'll ever see (if you're from the North East, it's worth a look, it's worth it if the highlight of your area is the beach at South Shields). The shopping leaves a bit to be desired, but Leeds and York are only a short train ride away and between the high street and St. Stephens, you can get pretty much anything you need in the City Centre.
everyone i've ever spoken to who's come here has liked it and can never understand the negative opinions outsiders have picked up from god knows where. it's handy for the coast, like sunderland, and it has the advantage from your point of view of being bloody miles from n*wc*stl*. prices are generally low. in 2017, it's uk capital of culture with stuff happening every night, so fill your boots.
Great. Thanks for the feedback guys I've lived in London my whole life, so imagine anyway I go will be quite different to what I'm used to. I read about the city of culture thing, that does sound interesting
If you've lived in London most of your life, the first thing you'll notice is how friendly everyone is.
I went to Hull Uni to study Law. Being a teetotal person who isn't that keen on people I can't really comment about the night life... The uni itself is very good though. Good facilities, top lecturers, etc. I didn't use the accommodation but my friend's student house on cottingham road was adequate. Nothing fancy but everything worked.
Its probably well above average for students, much better than somewhere like Lancaster or Keele, but nothing compared to Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle. If you've been living in London and your moving away then your probably after something different, the night life is okay not great but then again its more the people your with than the places you go. By all accounts the University is pretty good (depending on what course you do) and their sports program is decent (they place highly in the BUCS leagues). My recommendation would be to pick your Uni based on the course alone, everything else is what you make of it, I know people that went to small places and had the best three years and others that went to the big cities and were miserable.
Hull Uni has a justifiably great reputation, culturally and industrially respected alumni, a larger red brick campus then you'll expect, vibrant student areas around the Victorian avenues and the wide majestic Humber makes the Tyne and Wear look like a pair of piss streams. Yorkshire's great City of Culture, the secret is out.
Loved it when I went. Friendly, cheap, the nightlife is better than a lot of other places. Most of my southern mates remarked on how nice the people are and genuinely thought the birds on a night out were of a high level.
I think he means his mate is a bit short ( sorry verticaly challenged ) and all birds were 6 footers.
My Daughter is from Leeds but at Hull Uni. She loves it and won't hear a bad word about the City or the University. Sadly for you she is also now a Hull City fan (she was never interested in football (or Leeds United) when in Leeds, which shows what a good judge she is).
Thanks all, I went up for an open day and will be going up again at some stage in the future, certainly doesn't seem to be a bad place to end up at at all
