I had the choice of choosing either Invincibles or Treble as my username. It was indeed a dilemma, night after night tossing this way and that, sweat dripping, those little grey cells weighing up the pros and cons of each, and ofcourse I remained impartial in my decision-making throughout. In the end I decided on the Treble... because I like my vodka. The rest as they say, is history <ok>

That's exactly the problem with this debate. Why not compare being promoted from second division to first, then first season back win the title, then next season win the European Cup. Anyone ever done that before or since? There are probably other great achievements by clubs being overlooked here.

Ipswich won the league at the first crack in 61/62 I think, but didn't get far in Europe.
Herb Chapman's the only manager to win back to back titles with two clubs I think
SAF's the only manager to win three titles in a row twice
Probably other unique ones out there

Can't think of any club to have matched that achievement of Forest, tho' maybe one from elsewhere in Europe, and there's definitely no English club to have matched Utd in the Treble. Definitely another one to have gone undefeated tho' <whistle>

Can't remember if Villa's European Cup win was unique in any way. Not sure, maybe it's just the fact they've won it...

Didn't the manager leave halfway through that season? Thought I remembered something about them winning the cup after the manager left, same as Chelsea in 2012?

Maybe Arsenal should take heed and sack Wenger in January? ;)

Cloughie won back to back European cups with a club not considered very fashionable. The best. No question.

That is why football is a game of opinion. Having said that, I was in awe of Clough. Amazing manager who made derby and forest into great competitive teams. His was a double act but his ability was never in doubt.

Yeh it was pretty great while it lasted. Gerrard made a brilliant second striker with Torres too. Ah well!

Agree on Alonso - absolute joy to watch for Bayern now.

He's certainly better NOW than Gerrard is... but even back in 2008 you wouldn't have seen many saying he was better.

He's a lot more subtle than Stevie was in those days.. the sort of player that improves with age because he never had drive.

You can replace Mascherano, but you don't replace Alonso. Masch can regain possession and do the thuggish role (for want of a better word) but players like Alonso and (whether rival fans accept it or not) Carrick, read the game, intrecept, tackle, BUT also have the creativity to turn defending into attack in a heartbeat.

Do like Carrick, plays an undervalued role in the team. Always have a soft spot for the playmaker. Would've loved a Scholes or Xavi at Liverpool.

No debate over either of those. I guess the only real debate is whether Alonso at his peak is better than Gerrard was at his peak. Imo Alonso is better, particularly in controlling the game from CM, but it's hard to compare them due to the different styles.

Alonso was to liverpool what carrick is to is. Understated, under rated but probably the most important player.

Think you'll find Suarez leaving is a bigger reason for their fall. They cannot replace him.

Having to depend on Badon and Studge being out all season is killing us.

Is there a like for like swap for Suarez out there even? Who else bites people? <laugh>
