Think we'd take Rooney at Saints, if you lot don't really rate him. Pelle's looking like he might need a rest, Mane's a bit hit and miss in front of goal, and Shane Long's probably best coming off the bench running at tired defenders, so I reckon Rooney might just make our starting line up when he's fit.

Theyre actually chelsea and liverpool fans. They tend to say funny things without intending to be comedians.

Those are all qualities of a very good footballer, but not necessarily a world class one. When it comes to world class everyone has their own idea of that, but for me it's a player that stands out in all those qualities you have mentioned. Unfortunately, Rooney doesn't. I would even argue he doesn't do some of those things well either - he doesn't lead, and his passing is not consistently to a high standard. And here's the thing that stands out more than anything for me Chief, the thing that tells, When was the last time he went past a player or beat his man? He just doesn't have the footwork - sorry that's wrong, he used to, but something in him has lost that. As a result when he tries to use his feet or a bit of trickery, he gets dispossessed - far too often.

BTW I never once said that Ronaldo and Messi are the benchmark for world-class. I was only pointing out that around 2008, Ronaldo's development continued while Rooney's plateaued. It's been over 6 years since and Ronaldo has moved on. People forget that in 2008-09 most United fans and pundits alike were saying things like..."when Ronaldo leaves, Rooney will finally play his favoured position, he'll finally be the focal point of the team and he'll finally express his natural ability and reach his full potential etc. It never happened.

But just because I don't believe he is world class, doesn't equate to him being an average or poor player. Rooney is a very good number 10 and arguably an even better number 9. He is important for us and I continue to be delighted he is at United.

Rooney only hasnt reached his full potential because we for whatever reason expected him to be the greatest player to ever play the game.

I seriously doubt anyone in football thinks hes failed to meet his potential as they would have had more realistic expectations.

    As you say treble, opinions.

UIR why do you keep twisting what I'm saying? Where exactly have I said I expected him to be the greatest player to ever play the game? Why are things so black and white with you??? As Obi Wun said, only a Sith deals in absolutes. Calm down my paduwan learner! :p

I refer back to my original post, this always becomes about two extremes - he's world class? he's average/****? When the truth is somewhere inbetween. He's a very good player. That applies to plenty of players around the world. They're not world class, just below but very good nonetheless and most clubs would very likely be better off for having them in their starting 11.

I wasnt meaning you treble. Just in general people have unreasonable expectations of him.

    Anyway.

    Must win this game now!

Hate when we play on monday nights...we sometimes look lacklustre BUT with results going our way today, we really need to put a statement of intent down. Having Rooney back is a big plus also. Just feel like we can gain some real momentum here. Come on United!

Match day! How are you lot feeling about tonight?? I'd feel alot more confident if we didn't have so many CM's out. Should be a good game though as we can guarantee that both teams will go for it. You may see our latest academy player as well in Harry Reed. Been compared to Scholes in the past though I think that's down to his hair colour more than anything.

How do you think you will line up tonight? any predictions?

Interesting stat, but I'd have thought that might be the case for other teams too. Given it's usually the games against the better teams that get televised.

Still, like dave says, with our defence you probably won't get a better chance than tonight!

I said it's debateable he wouldn't get in every premier league side. If you played Silva at 10 behind Aguero he'd struggle to get in there for instance. I think he probably would get in the Chelsea side but Oscar has been outstanding for 2/3rds of the time under Jose in the last 18 months - hence why we were prepared to let Mata sit on the bench until we sold him. Oscar's only going to get better as well.

Obviously its hard to know exactly how a world 11 on paper would gel in practice. In the same way it's impossible for you to know how Rooney would perform in any other team in the world - yet you insist based on the same level of unknowns that he'd walk into any side and be brilliant. He could quite easily go to Spain and bomb the same way he's struggled at recent international tournaments. He's cosy at United and gets his own way every time he throws a strop (and wants a new contract), wouldn't happen elsewhere.
