A great clip of SEJ speaking here... But listening between the words.... he has some thoughts based on, I guess, solid information... makes sense....
Problems with the manager, or problems with some players? It seems as if some of them are not happy when they don't get on the pitch, natural if they really are good enough, but some have not exactly looked the part when they have been out there.
well, the rumours are rife, but getting Keith Andrews shipped out may help from what i understand, and Ekstrand may have been dropped for the same reasons. If our manager isn't prepared to take nonsense, that can't be a bad thing. Dyer's display on Friday after the game makes me think he could be the next one never to wear a yellow shirt again!
This is one of the reasons I wasn't happy about Sannino's departure. The petulance exhibited by some players is ridiculous. Dyer can take a long running jump as far as I'm concerned. He did well at Leicester, yes, but he's making out as if he's some Premiership player warming our bench. He should be thinking more about who pays for that bench and the clothes on his back. Fool. I would say he should train with the kids, but I don't want the poison to trickle down. Go and work in the shop for a fortnight, Dyer, learn some humility! And, given you're 32, you could be picking up an honest trade for your near future. I hope SJ is going to take a firm but fair, paternal approach to this. It's modern football. If Dyer et al want to play every week then sod off to a league or two beneath us. But they're too happy to take Championship money.
Shame as we have a good squad. Dyer and Andrews both add something.... I wonder if months of uncertain leadership have paid their price....
Players need to know their place, if you're good enough you'll play. The manager has a difficult job juggling to get best side out there within the rules (homegrown element, loanees etc.) We've probably suffered from the multitude of languages and less than perfect communication that usually results but that only really impacts on folks who can't take an adult approach and if in doubt about something ask!!!
I do not think anyone needs to listen between the words - he was quite categorical about the manager and dressing room unrest. I suggest that player power being what it is these days, that it was one of the major reasons GT quit management. Times have changed since the 80s -(were changing at the top before then I guess).
SJ needs to put the iron fist down and sort this nonsense out fast before the bad apples ruin the cider.
Hi Mark, I only saw this at the time and it was quick, but... Dyer seemed to blank SJ's handshake at the end of the game and stropped towards the tunnel because he didn't get a game like Kevin the Teenager. The man's a bit of dick, I think.
I said something on the match thread but I will say further that this is not recent or just this season; it was happening last season as well. I question whether it is the continental system the owners use to recruit and train and indeed their business model. Does it work in this country? Is it a scattershot policy where players were signed without thought to the match day formation or the constriction of loanees and also home grown quota to the match day squad? Leaving the Head Coach to solve issues that were created by other people such as Nani & Duxbury. Were players given a sales speal to sign only to find out reality is different. I know it has been denied, but is it that the Head Coach is effectively left with a faite compli when selecting? How much power or influence does he have on who comes in? (he does seem to have influence on who goes out!). Has any of our Head Coaches been consulted before players are brought in? Has he got any power or authority? Because if not then he cannot build respect with players or trust; if they have an issue they will want to go beyond him to those with power to make decisions. The most recent loan in for example is completely baffling as it is reported he came to get match fit for the Africans Cup - have we maybe been paid for that? If it is true then that would pi** off a number of midfielders would it not? And has that type of business policy affected us and other players previously? Andrews is an intelligent man; he has not knowingly caused trouble at any other club - so why here and now? This can be said for almost any of the other players rumoured to have caused or are causing problems - why here at Watford? What is the causal link? I have never known any other club to have the same precise issues we are having at the moment - ever, in my whole life. Something about the set-up must cause this; players that were previously happy, players with no previous record of being a trouble maker, managers (on the whole) with no previous issues of player power problems. I believe it goes deep and removing 1,2,3 or 4 players will not solve the root problem even if the results come back. I still look forward to more performances like last Friday's which was great fun and I still believe we will be promoted. Maybe in the Premiership the business model will work?
There are heaps of examples of companies taking over foreign operations and having problems imposing different management systems on the workers. Perhaps this is what is happening? My favourite example was Disney trying to prevent wine being consumed with lunch when they set up Eurodisney. I can well imagine senior professional footballers, who have only experienced British football, having difficulty coming to terms with a traditional managers job being split up. They would not understand who is responsible for what and be disappointed with the lack of response when asking the wrong person. Corporate cultures are funny things at the best of times. It must be even harder for a player like Andrews, who is on a long term loan presumably because his club doesn't want him.
i don't really know how much of what i hear is hearsay and how much is fact so the following could be taken with a very large pinch of salt. However, the word on the vine is that the players are not picked by the head coach, they are given to him. He may get a choice of 2 or 3 for a position he needs to fill, but ultimately the decision is not with him. He doesn't have the final say on who plays either allegedly. He is given a suggested team and he trains that team for the upcoming week. He makes suggested changes but the final say is not with him. It's odd to think that people who may even be in Italy are picking the team, judging from what they see from distance, i can't imagine this is true but if it is, it's hugely bizarre and cannot possibly work. Our current head coach seems to be very insistent that he picks the team, and i hope he does, but i do very much doubt he has any choice one who comes in and out of the club. And yes, the problems began under Zola, magnified under Sannino, where player power was even more evident, and now they continue. I do wonder where Nigel Gibbs will fit in with all this!
