I still firmly believe that he has the makings of an excellent striker, but he needs to be in played in his correct position with better attacking support from midfield and the flanks.
I don't rate him and would have preferred him to go on a free than get anything like 60k a week. That said, if he's here for the next few years I hope he proves worth it and proves us doubters incorrect.
I reckon it will be because we're midway into a the project of raising the clubs profile on the world stage. No point tying the stadium down to low paid sponsor when if we bide out time we could land a beast of a deal
Someone must have drugged Short, in order to get him to agree to 60 a week for a plank. Hope the coppers are called, and the culprits are caught.
I'm happy he has signed, but not for 60,000 a week. I hope to god he only gets that if he scores 20 + a season; his base has to be no more than 40, surely, and even that is pushing it. Did Colback get 40 grand at the nags?
I would like to see Whicks up front with Fletch or Giacca playing just behind , with this set up we will get the optimum return from what we have available, if they are not up to it, get shot and buy big time, by this I mean proven strikers, not gambles on unfit has-beens. For it is these two positions that are vital to success and it is where we are struggling big time imo. This reported deal is too generous, but did anyone else regret losing Colback, I know I did and yesterday just brought it back home, if Rodders can play half as well I will be pleasantly surprised.
60k a week forward should be returning 10-15 goals a season in the premier league. I don't believe his weekly wage will be 60k though. This story though could hurt us in january though when we get to the negotiation table for new players.
I am a big fan of Wickham and he will only get better, you have to remember he was only young, I remember people on this board who didn't rate Henderson and were glad to see the back of him. Wickham I think if given a long contract shows that at least we seem to be able to negotiate and can be an attractive club because our recruitment and selling of players has probably been the worst of the established Premier League teams. The squad still needs a huge rebuild, we cannot do it on buttons.
You never get the full story when numbers are bandied about! I'm assuming £60k, if true, would be the maximum over the life of a contract, averaged out, if he gets every bonus going, for appearances, goals, England call-up, etc..... His flat rate will be quite a bit less, probably around the £40-45k mark
Happy if he's signed but doubt it'll be £60k a week. Probably paper s**te! He did ok yesterday. Was excellent against Chelsea but poor against City (but he scored... Any striker who plays poor and scores is worth his weight in gold) If he went abroad we'd get nothing for him tribunal wise. I reckon he'd have ended up at Stoke or Palace personally. IF he's signed then great but it's only paper talk ATM Edit: he's only 21 remember. Nowhere near peak and he's doing ok. 1 in 8 for an out of position player is a decent return this season. Far better than borini from open play
FFS !! - £15, 600,000 over 5 seasons ? I hope this is f*cking bullshit ! Sorry and all that but he is not worth that amount unless he's hitting 20 -25 goals every season. ......End of chat !
I think you're a bit behind the times on two counts here. Firstly 60k isn't anywhere near a top wage for the premier league these days. Secondly, you can count the number of strikers who score 25 goals a season on one hand. That makes them the very top players who will play for the very top clubs and be on considerably more than 60k a week!
2013/14 goals and reported wages where I've heard the figures Suarez 31 (120k?) Sturridge 21 Toure 20. (260k) Aguero 17 Rooney 17 (300k)
2012/13 RVP 26 Suarez 23 Bale 21 Benteke 19 Michu 18 The top 3 on north of 120k per week. Bottom 2 good finds and now commanding big wages and out of our range as potential signings I'd say
A bit behind the times ?...No mate, it's just I don't rate him that much.....simple as that ! Put it this way, if we had let him go, I don't think another club would match that wage/contract based on his scoring ratio and all round current ability.
Somebody would take him cos he's got huge potential. The wage isn't enormous for what you could get out of him. It also guarantees us a transfer fee if we move him on in the next 4yrs. ATM we'd only get tribunal compo. Not many score 20 league goals any more mate. 10-12 is a good haul. He will probably end up around that if he plays all season, with a good proportion of that as a central striker.
