As a kid I swam off Ventnor before I could swim properly, if you get me. Years later, and as recently as a couple of years ago I was involved in the Round the Island Yacht Race, and I, as always looked out for Ventnor. Once we'd got to that point I was charged up to get round Bembridge and eventually back into Cowes. Ben Ainslie beat me by 6½ ours. Still, it's good company.
Tell them about your girl search PL and they'll be super quiet. There may be some zzzzz's but it'll be fairly quiet
Don't like beaches as such...though Colwell is popular. My favourite place is Yarmouth and walking the coastal path round there. Yarmouth has the feel of fifties Britain...can imagine the Famous Five there. Some beautiful properties and views.
I like to park at Bouldner, then walk along the front (wonderful view across to Lymington), then through Yarmouth (stopping for lunch in The Bugle or a tea in one of the many tea shops). From there its a pleasant walk to Fort Victoria or walk beside the old railway line to Freshwater.
I looked recently at prices to rent a holiday home on the island and take the family there next summer... It ain't cheap!!! Fran, do you know any private homeowners who let put at reasonable rates? Or cheap but clean B&Bs? Wife used to go on school trips and we'd love to take the kids, but crazy to think it's the same place a renting in france! May have to do a weekend instead.
Whilst I wouldn't recommend anyone over the age of 50, who is totally inexperienced, to try race sailing, I would say try leisure sailing before you die. Really..! You can go as fast as you, or the crew you go with, are skilled. Sadly, many keel boat sailors don't know how best to shape their sails to get best speed. They lol [ <- as expressed here, click the link] along and it can get quite boring. It left my immediate elder brother cold, but then he decided to be a passenger and not an active component of the boat; my best friend played his harmonica sat on the transom while we stormed across the Solent, not having a clue how much potential danger he was in, although he loved it [he bought his own keel boat on the strength of it]; my eldest brother [who can't swim] trusted me to save his life, and had the adventure of his lifetime [he still tells the story of leaning out with the sea brushing his hair], and most people will too. In fact, many people have no concept of the adventure that is out there between the Mainland and the Island. Get round the corner, and it's the open sea, and that's when it can really get interesting.
Or we can get a speed boat and water ski right close to you sailors and get some shaking fists... Which if I recall correctly is where this conversation went on here, a couple of years back!
The thrill comes from being 70 yards back, at the end of a rope, with your feet in one plank of wood and the boat pulling you at several knots through the waves Ps: I've never sailed, but would love to have a go.
I've done a bit of surfing. It wasn't really for me. I have an open opportunity to do wind-surfing, and I really should before I get too old. I think I should make up my mind to do it next summer. All the kit is available for me to use. As to Sailing, do try it. I would recommend dinghy sailing at first. It is much more vivid in lighter winds, although I've done Force 7-8 in a dinghy, without a life-jacket [and no real swimming ability], and that was interesting, to say the least. Even in a keel-boat a Force 7-8 would be stirring. On any sunny warm day in summer, with a breath of wind about, sailing just has it over almost anything else you can do. Those are the active days you live for. It is as close as you can get to heaven. No kidding.

Nice one SA. How about a bit of Hendrix that harks to the days when he backed Little Richard. This is off Axis: Bold as Love... Wait Until Tomorrow. This is one of those tunes that you could hum on a deserted island when it's raining, and you'd still be cool. there's a number of elements then. a) he was defensive because they were harassing him or because they were not black b) they were overzealous and possibly use illegal methods to subdue a man mountain or a black man depending on how you see it. c) the court threw it out because they thought the actions were reasonable or because of the race of either side. no condoning the choke hold if that is indeed illegal for them to use, except that i wouldn't know how else to deal with a man that size. maybe pepper spray? edit: I've seen smaller men unimpressed by a police taser, so i don't think that's a solution.
I would never be-little water ski-ing. It just wasn't for me. Just as speedboating isn't for me. To me, being on the open water is about using sails for power. It's incredible when a sail grabs the wind and catapults you forward. It makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Sometimes, it can be too much for me. A half-decent catamaran, under real wind power, gives me almost as much fright as thrill.
