Petit, discussing what he called a lack of respect for his former team-mate Thierry Henry in the French media, said the domestic view of the striker was “hypocritical and cowardly”. He added: “I have great difficulty with the French, I have never seen such arrogant, smug, lying and hypocritical people,” and concluded: “Sometimes I think that if we’d been overrun by the Germans, we’d be better run.” Petit, who played alongside Henry in the team that won the 1998 World Cup and spent three years at Arsenal from 1997 to 2000, has now apologised for any offence he caused with the latter statement.
