Stephanie Roche is up for FIFA's goal of the season. What a fabulous goal it is too. Wonder who will win it?

It is a good goal, unfortunately it's appearance on the shortlist is solely down to the fact she's female.

So if a man (say Bale or Ronaldo) scored it then it would be on the shortlist?

If a man (say Fred Smith playing for Reckitts - a lot higher level of football) scored it then it wouldn't be on the list.

It's only on the list because it was scored by a woman.

Of the three finalists, it's the best goal in terms of individual quality.

Although the goal itself may be good, it was scored in a much weaker level than all the others, against a load of ****, in comparison to the other two, which were scored against Spain and Uruguay.

James Rodriguez's was the best overall.

I was gonna post about this. It's yet another instance of embarrassing tokenism in football.

There are countless brilliant goals every week at all levels of football, the sheer number of games which take place ensures that. Whittling it down to 3 based on quality alone would be impossible. The selection process used obviously weights heavily towards the significance of the game the goal was scored in. The chances of 2 of the 3 best goals all year happening in the world cup finals are very remote indeed. They've then just gone and shoehorned a female player's goal in there to tick a box, which is pathetic.

Yep this has gone pretty much as I'd imagined it would. Predictable.

If goals on school pitches count, why have none of my belters made the shortlist when I've had a kick about with my mates?

The "galloping major" would certainly have appreciated her effort -he had a brilliant left foot.

Her goal us awesome. Regardless of how many saw it live, if she's a bloke or if it was against the best team in the world. It's technically brilliant.

RVP s header was a great goal. Showed good footballer thinking. The 3rd option, sure, another great goal. Miss Roches goal tho was technically frigging amazing.

Cock all to do with her not having a penis.

It's a brilliant goal, but a goal scored on a park in Ireland is unlikely to topple goals scored in the World Cup.

There are a few things to consider here:

    1) Yes it was an unbelievable goal.
    2) You would see equally as unbelievable goals somewhere in the world every single week. Same applies for the other 2 on the shortlist.
    3) In any situation such as this, the setting, opposition and occasion always has to be taken into account. This is why 2 world cup goals are on there, they want to promote the world cup as the pinnacle of football achievement.
    4) Sadly this goal purely is in there as a gesture to promote women's football. I'm the most pro-feminist male that I know but it's as simple as that. We'll see better goals in League 2 than the other 2 on the shortlist but we all accept they're not going to make the shortlist. It's just how it is.

Do they do an order for the top 3? If so there is no way in the world that Roche's goal will finish 3rd. I'd stick my mortgage on it. Id' vote for Van Persie's cos I guarantee nearly everyone watching wouldve opened their mouth in astonishment that he even thought of trying it. 999 people out of 1000 wouldve taken it down and ran through on goal and that's what makes it genius.

Exactly. Anyone can score a wonder goal on a park against amateurs, goodness knows it happens every day, and better than that one.

If that was against the 10 willies of Spain there's no way the defender would even have let her fart about with the ball like that, it almost certainly would never have happened.

Its nothing to do with the fact that she doesn't have a willy, or the fact that her opponents don't have willies, and she's probably a gifted footballer, but it's like putting me in a room full of amputees and marvelling when I take them all on and win 50-0 on my own.

It obviously is though. Goals like that will be scored at a similar standard all the time and go unnoticed. They obviously went looking for a good goal scored by a female. No one involved would have even known about this goal until they decided they wanted to find one like it.

How is the winner decided? Is it public vote or panel judged?

Then she's bound to win. Agree it was a great goal but better ones are scored every week at all levels of football. I'm sure a few years ago a guy playing for Glentoran made the shortlist amongst a bunch of big name stars. They probably like to throw a wildcard in each year, probably based on which youtube video has most hits or something.
