As I said earlier if we are just comparing an individuals ability then you can't go on what they have won within a team as a good team makes any player look better and it's not as if Gerrard has not won anything during his career but put Cantona in a poorer team and he's still a great player. (spit)
Perhaps in a game against a superior midfield like Barca with Xavi and Iniesta, where the focus is on stopping the other team playing. But Gerrard never had the ability to control the tempo of the game like Scholes did. He could turn it up in the big games, but I always remember him doing that when freed from the need to play a disciplined CM role, rather than actually pulling the strings in the centre. You'll probably know this better than me, but in what big games did Gerrard actually play really well as a proper CM?
And yet you, and every other Liverpool fan, will happily put Suarez ahead of Rooney after one great PL season, compared to ten years as one of the best players in the league?
Tbh that sums Gerrard up for me. People will always argue he was a great individual player, but when putting together a balanced team of PL players, there simply isn't room for a player like Gerrard. Whilst he had an all round ability and athleticism that most players would struggle to match, there have been better players than him in every position. Same reason Rooney would never be near a best PL XI - he's arguably the best combined scorer and creator of goals in the PL after Henry, but doesn't excel at either of those when compared to Cantona, Zola, Shearer, Aguero etc.
For someone who is allegedly one the best and most influential players in PL history it is, yes. Twice you finished second and twice you ****ed up. Players like him are supposedly meant to make the difference and he has failed to do that. Well, apart from last season when he did of course make the difference in handing the title to City. Wasn't he on the pitch when you blew a three goal lead to Palace too? Yeah, thought so.
He has always been the linchpin of what we've done well in the past 10-15 years. The reasons we haven't won the league is because our first team has not contained enough players that are as good as him, coupled with not enough quality on the bench, compared to our opponents. If you honestly believe he's the problem, then you're a lunatic
My apologies. So you would say that, compared to over 10 years as one of the best players in the League, Suarez can't be considered to be on the same level as Rooney?
No, I honestly believe he's half the player Cantona was. You suggested otherwise because, allegedly, Cantona wasn't around for long enough. Gerrard is a self fulfilling myth perpetuated by Liverpool fans, if you tell the world he's the best player loud and often enough you all start to believe it's true. It's not. There are many, many better players to have graced the premier league than Gerrard and most of them have actually won it.
Out of 100 Slippy would get a 61 Scholes would get an 83 Ratface would get an 85 Henderson would get 54 Giggs 81
For me Cantona was one of the greatest United players ever. He was the catalyst that made the team and brought the long awaited titles to OT. He was a champion and he made others to be champions. He is almost unique in that respect. But the greatest premiership player must surely be Giggs. He has achieved something that no one has ever achieved and no one ever will again. He has scored in every season of the premiership from 1992/93 until the end of the 2012−13 season (except for last season when he only played in 7 matches). He won a phenomenal 13 premiership titles. He made massive contributions to most of these titles. Never mind the FA cups and the treble. To even compare Gerrard (who has not even won a single league title) to Giggs is an insult to him (Giggs).
Even within the RS, the Rat was a better player than Stevie Me. The rat was like a poor man's (a VERY poor man's) Cantona. He almost drove the team to the title whereas Cantona did it in style.
The gerrard myth is being pushed hard. He was never all that. Obviously a very good player but never world class. He lacked tge mentality to put the team first. It was always about him. The rs lapped it up.
What has gerrard done to compare with the best united players of thw past 20 years? Besides very little obviously. Weve obviously missed something so please, let us know.
