But 99 times out of 100 that IS down to the top 4 team being off their game.

Outrageous. He won the champions league with a team who probably spent less than at LEAST half of their competitors. He then went to Inter and did the same to a slightly lesser extent.

Chelsea had an off day but we caused them to have an off day! If Chelsea had scored after 5 minutes they possibly would have wiped the floor with us! We prevented them from scoring early, which contributed to their 'poor' performance!

No arguments there but if Chelsea had been on top o their game, then nothing Sunderland did would have been able to stop them.

Exactly. Lazy to say he has only done it with money clubs (and there's a reason big clubs keep coming in for him!!). He won the treble with Inter having just sold their best player as well.

Few unnecessary meltdowns on this thread ;)

No arguments with the fact that you executed your game plan really well and deserved a result. Fact is that we weren't at our best. If we were then there would only be one outcome. That's just the way it is. Well done though and do the same to City.

I can remember Chelsea at Liverpool at the end of last season parking two buses in front of the goal. In this league you do what you need to do to get the result. Jose was just deflecting attention away from his own sides poor performance. It's what he does......like not seeing Costa hit Brown in face.......not a bad manager though.....lol. Sunderland were brilliant....end of!

Ask yourself, why weren't Chelsea on top of their game? It was because we played so well defensively, not because there were any issues with the quality of their attack. I realise it's difficult for you to give us credit but that's what we deserve.

If Chelsea had started the match looking off the pace and tired then your argument would hold water but they were as confident and aggressive as ever, until they realised they were up against a side that just wasn't going to be beaten, and their resolve was worn down.

That's why they weren't on top form, because of our quality, not their lack of it.

    Sunderland didn't park the bus.
They had a fair go at Chavski.
Pants had **** all to do apart from a few bread & butter saves.
    The hairy **** was ****.
Costa Lotta could have been red carded twice never mind once.
Catts & Santi were ****ing class.
Kevin Friend was a cock sucking coward.
The crowd & atmosphere were spot on.
And all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the day & anybody disagree's can suck my plums. <ok>

Mate just read your post back, it's ridiculous. "Chelsea were as confident and aggressive as ever until they realised the were up against a team that weren't going to be worn down."

At which point, what? They put their tails between their legs and went to cry in the corner about the nasty Sunderland not letting them win? Howay.

This has nothing to do with giving you guys credit, I have already done so on this thread. But the same applies to Newcastle as it does to Sunderland, and all the other mid to lower half teams in the league. To get a result against the likes of Chelsea, we have to have a good day and they have to have a bad one. No matter how well we play, if they are on song they will turn us over. Just accept it, it's no sleight against your club at all. Making such a song and dance about people not worshipping at the feet of Sunderland comes across a bit childish.

"Making such a song and dance about people not worshipping at the feet of Sunderland comes across a bit childish."

Not being able to give credit where it's due because of bias is childish. I knew as soon as the match was over that people who didn't really understand what had gone on during the match would say it was due to Chelsea having an off day rather then recognising a superb defensive performance.

"At which point, what? They put their tails between their legs and went to cry in the corner about the nasty Sunderland not letting them win? Howay."

I realise you're resorting to hyperbole to try and make a point but I never said they went off crying into a corner. I said that as the match went on and they realised they weren't getting a sniff their resolve dipped somewhat. Which is exactly what happened. I don't know what is so hard to grasp there for you.

I don't actually doubt that but in all of this the point remains:

For the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland and all but 5 or 6 teams, to get a result against the likes of Chelsea, requires us to have a good day and them to have an off day. Just how it is.

Yes but there's two ways that can happen. Sometimes a top team turns up and is totally off their game from start to finish and gets nothing from the match. That's when you say so and so had an off day.

When the same top team turns up in top form, and the lesser team frustrates and out grafts them to the extent that they can't play their own game, that's when the lesser team deserves the credit and throwaway comments like "they were just off their game" are ill informed, incorrect and unfair.

Played totally defensive football with both teams, and in Porto's case was forever holding up the game with mystery injuries. If you have been watching football that far back search your memory how Porto played against ManU at OT.

You are either missing the point or choosing not to register it. If Chelsea played to their best, then no matter how good your "stifling" or "frustrating" is, they will turn you over. Fact. It doesn't have to be one or the other, Sunderland worked their game plan to a Tee, and Chelsea had an off day.
Of course I have been watching football that long, it was less than 10 years ago. What I saw was a managerial masterclass from Mourinho, dragging a team past superior opponent after superior opponent, using every trick in the book. it was genius, I don't believe any other manager could have managed it. In fact, I believe Mourinho is more suited to being in charge of "the underdog" but either way he is a fantastic manager. What do you put his success with Inter down to?

I understand your point I just don't agree with it, possibly in the same way that you seem to be glossing over my point.

I don't want to go over the same ground but just because a big team fails to beat a smaller team it doesn't necessarily mean that it was due to an off day. Sometimes once in a blue moon the little guy is just that good. Anyway. I think this dead horse has been beaten enough.
