Charlie Austin has turned down a new 3 year £64k a week deal according to today's Sun. So he'll be gone soon...
Why would he commit now? Hes worked bloody hard to get to the Prem and as we are rooted to the bottom im sure he wont want to stay if we are relegated
Seems out of character - he genuinely seems to have an affection for us. If true (doubtful) then he's still tied to his current deal on lower wages which would still be another couple of years I think.
We need to stay in the pack starting with a win today, if we seem to be adrift by January there could be bids for him. As Wubba says he won't want to stay if we go down but, paradoxically, he might just be the key to us staying up...
There are many reasons for turning down a new contract. If we go down we won't want him to stay on a 64k a year deal! If there is a relegation clause that says his wage drops substantially then he won't want to stay.
On the subject of centre forwards, what a tremendous signing Danny Welbeck was for Arsenal at only £16 million. That seems a like a real steal - not really sure why Man Utd let him leave, and on the cheap, to a rival club. He just powered in a great header to put the Gunners 1-0 up at WBA. In comparison, Ross McCormack going to Fulham from Leeds for £11 (£6 million fee with £5 million in add ons based on promotion), seems rather overpriced. Saying all that, Charlie was a fantastic signing for us at £4 million, and certainly appears to be coming of age with his goal scoring abilities in the Premier League.
We way as well give him a blank cheque book if he keeps scoring goals at this rate. Invaluable if he keeps us up.
