Is all life sacred and therefore any termination immoral?

Should we really consider a foetus or even a bioplast life? A heartbeat will appear after 6-8 weeks at a time when we still have a backbone tail, the gender can be determined after 15-18 weeks, (does genetalia make us human?) and even though medical science can assist a child to live outside the womb after around 24-28 weeks, often with complications and post-birth issues - do we draw the line at 24 weeks before we can consider the bump as life?

Should people be able to rear children no matter what their personal circumstance or should they be allowed to abort a foetus and continue with their lives, for instance, what if it's a 14 year old girl? A rape victim, or a mistake on a drunken night out where the paternal father may be unknown?

There could be other circumstances where people may feel a termination is warranted such as the case of severe handicap and it may be known that the child might not have be able to enjoy a high quality of life.

So what's your views on abortion, where do you stand?

I'd agree with diddles, the mother has the final say on these things and shouldn't be held accountable to anybody if she wishes to terminate a pregnancy.

I'm gonna make it even more difficult.

What if the woman never thought about having an abortion, and then went for a scan, only to discover that it was deformed, or had downs or something.

All women should have the choice, and for some it must be a heart breaking decision,

I agree but what frustrates me is the way that some (men & women) see it as a form of last minute contraception!

My wife and I had to abort our baby earlier this year after we discovered it had severe deformities (pentalogy of Cantrell). She basically had no legs, spinal deformities, internal organs were on the outside of her body etc. If we had continued with the pregnancy my wife would have probably miscarried. If not and the baby went full term she would have suffered and died within minutes. So we took the painful option of aborting. Afterwards we were given the option of seeing our baby. She was only 16 weeks (about 4 inches long) and, unlike her body (which we didn't want to see and was covered up), her little face was perfect! After experiencing this as far as I was concerned our little baby was alive and the thought of us terminating a healthy baby now makes me feel sick to the stomach! However I would never think less of people having an abortion for the right reasons, whether its a healthy baby or not! Some people are not ready to bring a life into the world and I wonder how many children would have suffered horribly over the years if the option of abortion wasn't given to parents!

The moral conundrum with abortion, is that there's many couples who'd give anything to have their own baby and can't for medical reasons.

That's the only thing I'd have to think long and hard about if I was a woman in that situation.

That's awful mate, sorry to hear that.

My brother's wife miscarried twice before they had their first child and they have two now. If they didn't miscarry their first two, then these two would never have been born as they only ever wanted two children. Life works in ways that seem cruel and unkind for no reason, but that heartache can change to joy and elation in a heartbeat.

I completely agree about the way people use it as a last form of contraception, that's bound to happen though if it's freely available no questions asked.

I don't know whether to say I'm happy or sad for you mate, you've gone through pain to get somewhere and you'd never change it for the world. That's what I mean, life sometimes seems to deal people **** cards but sometimes the **** cards win the hand.

We 'lost' our first one due to miscarriage, technically it was terminated after the heartbeat could no longer be detected around the 10th week. I also declined the offer of seeing what there was to see.

I'm quite a chipper bloke on the whole and despite having a pragmatic attitude I still felt very sad for several weeks. I don't think anyone -sociopaths apart, goes through any form of termination lightly.

Horrible to hear that Quentin. The thing I cannot get my head around is that a healthy baby can be aborted at 24 weeks, when it could survive outside the womb on it's own. For me, that is wrong.

There's something fundamentally wrong with the abortion law, when the legal limit for abortion is 24 weeks, but the earliest born surviving baby was only 21 weeks. This simply can't be right

    caveat: medical reasons aside.

Bit of a head **** this one. I think everybody should have the choice for whatever reason they deem it necessary but at what point does terminating a foetus become killing a baby due to laziness or jut irresponsibility.

It's a touchy subject for a lot of people and rightly so. It's never effected me so I wouldn't really like to have too strong an opinion, I feel for anybody it has.
