Neither am I a fan of his. or Macca. But always find it funny that the leftie types defend and excuse tax dodgers like Bono and Sting yet have a pop at Elton John and McCartney who stopped here and paid their taxes even when rates were punitive.
Anything popular becomes commercial by definition. Even so-called rebellious, anti-establishment stuff. If no one buys it then it dies out.
Take your point but in music terms "commercial" nowadays refers more to the sound of the music than the success of it (accepting this is a rather flexible use of the word but that's how it is). I rather liked Elton's "Songs From The West Coast" album as it goes, from 2001, though I'm not generally a fan of his on the whole. "Song For Guy" though, love that...
