So? Think of all the tax he's paid to end up with that. Bono has about £600 million and has paid a lot less tax. Why doesn't he put his hand in his pocket instead of getting publicity for generously giving up a couple of hours of his time?
Geldof got shirty when the SKY interviewer said there were aloof rich people in the room and if they all paid their taxes governments would have more to use for this sort of thing. He went on about Bono should have been in another recording studio but had put himself out to be there. Someone else was preparing for a tour but had come to the recording. You got the impression we should be on our knees thanking them. In another interview Geldof was asked, as a wealthy man, how much tax he paid. He was most put out and replied he gave his time and surely that was like a tax on him. The pompous self-regard of these people knows no bounds.
The Beatles moved all their rights into an arms length company to avoid paying tax in the 60's. The reality is that most wealthy people take measures to limit their tax liabilities.
Any proof of that? Even man of the people Lennon? They paid a fortune in tax by remaining here. As did Elton John. Yet of course they aren't darlings of the right on, saving the planet brigade so get told to put their hand in their pocket whilst tax evading twats like Bono and Sting get an easy ride from gullible sods.
I agree most people with money hire swanky accounts to find tax loopholes. But most rich people don't preach about charity wile they're doing it.
If you're earning a lot of money and a smart accountant helps you keep most of it then fine by me! Who wouldn't do the same? It's the fact people come over all righteous & saintly when really they're all doing these things for themselves in one way or another! Same as children in need! Shane Ritchie and his ex ( a Nolan sister ) are on doing their bit then who appears on the stage to sing? Their f'king sons band who no one had hardly heard of!
Like the 'principled' Tony Benn. Band Aid, Geldof and Bono can get ****ed for me. I don't know how these tax-dodging arseholes have the nerve to ask for donations.
I have much more respect for the OAP who chips in a quid of their pension money than those superstars attempt to get the less well off to donate. While they are loaded and preach of how they gave their time free of charge.
Another new version...
How do those who bought tickets to the concerts feel about it? Back to Geldof - absolute grade A c**t. His reaction to being asked about the tax situation showed him up for exactly what this is. !00% behind Adele, best thing she's ever done in my eyes. And another one is Elton John. He's got the barefaced cheek to sing a song called 'Made In England' but he lives in ****ing tax exile so he can spunk his money on flowers and tiaras. ****s the lot of em.
If they actually gave a **** about the cause then instead of spending thousands on flights to be part of the video they could have recorded their parts in Toronto and donated the money they would have spent on flights to the charity.
But then they wouldnt have been in the photoshoot and got all the media attention. And that's what is important here.....
Elton John lives in Berkshire and The Times had to print an apology after inaccurately suggesting that he was involved in a tax avoidance scheme. He's also donated/raised $200m for his Aids Foundation, which is pretty impressive. Now he just needs to stop making records.
Ah right, am i out of date? I'm pretty sure - purely from memory and no recent research - that he did declare that his main residence was abroad so he paid no / little UK tax. I'm going back about 10 years when I heard this, mind. Or I might be totally wrong and if that's the case and he's reading, soz like Elton and thanks again to Watford for ballsing up the play-off semis
Naturally you will realise the paradox in praising the amount he has donated whilst suggesting he stops doing what brings in the money to be able to do so.
I really like some of his early stuff written in collaboration with Bernie Taupin but pretty much everything from about '79 onwards is just commercialised crap imho.
