They didn't do it anywhere near as often last year against much better opposition. A decent manager will eradicate those errors, and he doesn't let it spread as it has here.
I find Tetley very defensively unsure sometimes, he was superb at intercepting passes and getting to second balls but when players run straight at him he seemed to dither and back off at times. We didn't have enough presence in that area of the pitch, I don't find other teams physically stronger we just lack confidence. That formation was all over the place, not sure who was supposed to be on the left wing and it certainly wasn't Johnson as he was too central, Redmond switched wings at times, Olsson had a poor game but he had barely any support as they marauded along our left wing. I'm not a fan of wingers but I really think Adam's screwed up selling Pilkington and putting Bennett on loan. It was poor Rick if this was a team like Derby then perhaps I would see things differently, we were atrocious defensively and should not be conceding three goals at home, for me something is not right at the club the players look unmotivated and are lacking confidence at times.
Look at the players we have and our depth of squad. Objectively we should be right up there and not languishing in mid table. We have dropped points against a lot of mediocre sides recently. Either our players are not up to the job or the management - not just Adams but all the management - are not up to the job. It could be that the management structure is not right and hopefully brining back phelan will address this. I can recall posting when we were top how I thought that we were in an artificial position due to the good breaks the likes of grab were getting in front of goal compensating for deficiencies elsewhere. Currently I would not wants Adams job. I honestly couldn't tell you our best 11 or the correct formation. We have an awful lot of options and it is the managers job to choose the players and formation. Our recent run suggests this is not being done currently and until he hits the right formula we will continue to struggle. I suspect there is something wrong in the dressing room. We have far too many players making silly errors. Perhaps certain individuals feel they are untouchable and exert too much influence behind the scenes. I honestly don't know but I do know that if the management do not sort the problem out we will be ok because with the quality players we have I could probably keep us up but we will only be mid table come May. I still think we have a great chance of going up. We have the depth of squad that others do not. We have funds to strengthen in January. With a bit of organisation and graft I'm certain we can rise up the table again.
So if Rosler - your top choice to replace Hughton - had been in charge Saturday Grabban, Jerome, Johnson, Turner and others would not have missed the chances they did, Ruddy would not have let the shot go underneath him etc etc. I assume that following your logic the two goals in last nights Premiership match were caused by bad managers rather than individual errors by experienced players. What was the expression used on Sky by Bob Geldoff?
"Bollox" I think 1950. Agree 100% with your comments. Any team from our squad should be capable of promotion. It's down 100% to the players not performing
Are we saying, then, that a manager has no influence on the team, and that it's 100% down to the players? Why are we paying for one then? I agree there have been some underwhelming performances, but a strong manager would give them the proverbial kick up the 'arris they require.
The intended management structure included the experience of Joe Royle which disappeared out of the door due to no fault of Adams or the Board. Hopefully the arrival of Mike Phelan will help matters. The main point however is that despite our recent poor form we are still ' right up there ' - only 5 points off automatic promotion - and there is therefore no sense in the ' sack everybody from the tea lady up ' panic being shown currently. Of course we should be concerned if this run continues and we do end up ' languishing in mid table ' with little hope of going up but we are not currently in that situation. What I am convinced of is that no matter what happens Adams will never be accepted by a section of our supporters - not just on here. If we win it is luck - if we lose it is down to Adams. In a bad run it is the fault of Adams - if we now go on a good run it will be because lady luck has returned.
IMO, "the proverbial kick up the 'arris" doesn't work with professionals. Identifying problems and how they should be corrected in the strongest terms going does though does, as does reminding them that they are 'professionals' who are better than that. In the end, however, as 1950 says, it's down to the players to improve their performance and show that they really are 'professionals'. I also agree about some people only seeing what they want to see regarding Adams (or Hughton for that matter), whereas in retrospect everything about Lambert was wonderful in the extreme (except that it wasn't). And by the way, we are still on exactly the same number of points Lambert's Championship team had after 16 games, as well as losing 4-0 at home to MK Dons in the Cup.
No. What I am saying is that the Manager sorts out the tactics etc. If those tactics produce chance after chance there is nothing wrong with the Manager. If experienced players miss those chances it is the fault of the player. Last night both Villa and Southampton were defensively well set up but were undone by individual player errors - you can't blame either manager for that. All the Manager can do is make changes for future games if the individual errors continue.
Well if we are to believe 1950 and Rick there's no need to have a manager or coaching team as it's all down to the players, they are professional and should be good enough ? Sorry I don't wish to offend but that's utter twaddle, how else would you explain 1p5wich's season so far ? A bunch of average championship players at best yet they are currently playing out of their skin for their manager, it was the same for us when Paul Lambert was here. It's all about getting your tactics right and playing to your strengths, admitedly you cannot account for individual errors like Ruddy's on Saturday but to let in three goals at home making mistake after mistake is not acceptable IMO
I think we're talking about different things, KIO - whether the three goals conceded were down to individual errors or the tactics chosen for the match. IMO, it was the former. Adams wasn't on the pitch; the players were. They need to cut out these mistakes by upping their concentration and the intensity of their performance. The tactics worked well enough for the three goals we scored and two defensive midfielders should have done better to prevent the goals against. They didn't.
YET AGAIN - that is not what we are saying. If points are lost due to tactical errors it is the fault of the management team. IMO if you are drawing away from home in injury time and send your central defenders up for a corner then your management team deserves slating for allowing that to happen. If the tactics produce numerous chances and experienced professionals miss those chances then, ON THE DAY, there is nothing the management team can do about it. If your team is well set up defensively and 3 goals are conceded by ill judged tackles, GK errors or players not doing their jobs then again, ON THE DAY, there is nothing the management team can do about it. If the individual errors continue then the management decision is when to make changes in the team.
Or, maybe, our players, or several of them, are not as good as we think. We have the deepest squad in the division according to posters here, but that matters little if the have neither the skill or the will to implement this supposed superiority. The biggest mistakes NA has made is not re-integrating Bassong and allowing Bennett out on loan.
Bennett has not been a regular starter for a while. He was, quite rightly in my opinion, 3rd choice behind Snodgrass and Pilkington and was then 3rd choice behind Redmond and Murphy. It makes sense to send him out on loan to get game time especially as he might be needed if Redmond is sold in January. I rate Bassong but he had quite clearly lost interest even before Hughton went. Quite clearly he had no intention of being re-integrated into the squad and, bearing in mind he had done the same thing at Spurs and Newcastle, we were faced with a financial headache that could only be eased by a loan away to another Club.
Have to be careful what you write on here - it's so easily taken the wrong way. A 'kick up the 'arris' was meant as a generic term, not to be taken literally! My point was that the manager must have some input, as well as the players also taking responsibilities for under-performing. I have NEVER moaned about a manager of ours, not Hughton, not anyone, (nor I might add, have I ever booed a player either during, or immediately after a game) but I was and am worried about appointing an untried gaffer when we did. I'll never understand that.
I have visions of Rob endlessly trawling through all your past posts in the hope of proving you wrong!
