Superb..! 75 year old Sir Robin Knox-Johnson claims third place in his class of the singlehanded transatlantic Route du Rhum race, from St Malo in France to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. He has no plans to give up racing or sailing at all.

    One of my life heroes.

Mine too, TSS, that is fantastic at his age. I've always been in awe of those long-distance solo sailors, ever since Sir Francis Chichester completed his record-breaking solo circumnavigation of the world in 1966. He stopped once in Sydney, but 3 years later Knox-Johnson went one better by becoming the first person to do it solo and non-stop. Brilliant that he's still sailing.

Bit of trivia question: Do you know how SRK-J used to wash himself while doing his round the world trip..?

Well, the usual thing, while sailing, is to put a bucket over the side and tip it over one's head [I have had the singular distinction of doing this once - never again if I can help it :) ]. Sea water can be quite sticky, incidentally.

Not for SRK-J. He rigged up a sheet on Suhali's transom and let it trail in the water. That sort of thing offers no real drag, and he wasn't in a race, so it was no big deal.

So every morning, come wind, rain or shine, he came on deck naked, and threw himself off the bow, while Suhali continued to sail on course, via self steering. He swam vigorously as Suhali sailed by him, and it was only when she'd got past that he reached out for the sheet. If he had missed it, or the sheet had weathered away in the night, there was no going back. Suhali would have sailed on without him.

    I say, f*** that..! :)

Exactly this PL. Maybe if she you hadn't have told her how you felt or tried to kiss her etc, you'd need to message her (in your world) for her to know how you feel. But you did so she does know, if she wants to act on it she'll message YOU.

If she doesn't she's not worth your time.

The thing is, messaging her isn't with the intention of making her know how I feel or anything like that. It's just to chat because I like chatting with her and I haven't spoken to her in a while. There's no ulterior motive (aside from reassurance that things are okay between us).

Honestly. Can't I talk to someone, even someone I'm attracted to, without it being somehow construed as something it's not (or not meant to be at least)? Sure, in the long term chatting keeps us in contact, which increases the chance of her feelings developing.... but that's like something I'm barely thinking of atm.

So stop acting like it's not the most important thing in the world then. It'll do you good.

My concern today is not so much regarding the possibility or not of a relationship in the future, but for the maintenance of our existing friendship.

Okay, then look at it this way. You chat to the people on here. You seem to quite like some of us. If you replied to one of Beefy's messages on here, but he didn't come back to you for a couple of days, would you panic?

No, because you'd think 'oh, he's missed it, or he's probably not been online/had time".

    Just treat it like that.

Very good point. But I haven't tried to kiss Beefy (yet ;))... it's only because in my mind she has a reason to dislike me or want to not be friends that I am panicking. Had I not tried to kiss her, things probably would be fine even if I hadn't spoken to her in a while. Plus, the whole changing her event response on Facebook from going to declined seems a bit odd and makes me worry that she was originally going to go, then saw I was going and changed her mind.

Unrelated... I got a bit cross a month or two ago when someone unknowingly used the word "mong". BBC has just done an article about why it is, in my view, one of the most offensive words you can use.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-ouch-30129358

I also subsequently realised that there was a girl at my school with Down's Syndrome towards whom people used this word in a derogatory way, and I wish I'd been big enough to speak up about it at the time. I think that is why I get a bit cross with that one now.

Sweet Lord, have mercy. Try and watch this through, if you can. Gets more absurd and outrageous as you go.

Interesting CMFG. Like a lot of people, I knew about the connection between Down's Syndrome and the use of the slang word Mong, but I had no real knowledge of its original use, and the work by John Langdon Down, back in the late 19th century. Like you, I find all such ignorant references, such at that one to being highly offensive. I consider those that throw that kind of derogatory slang word around to be lazy and ignorant.

Similarly, a person once accused me of being mental, as in you're mental, pal. I retorted with something along the lines of... Thank you, you ignorant ****. You've just accused me of having the ability to think..! It went right over his head. :)
