1970 Pompey 5 Watford 0. I was seven when my father first took me up the terrace. 2/6 to get in, I distinctly remember on the turnstile it said "boys". We had to leave early to get back to Chi so my Mother wouldn't find out he'd taken me to a football match.

Indeed, how you can always identify an old Cicestrian. Or someone from Bognor but we don't talk about them.

In the olden days, I know ACAB and all that but the young louts knew to behave else the filth might just take them down the nick and give them a ****ing good hiding. Now they do **** all as they have to fill in a stack of paperwork every time they fart.

I got nicked outside the Hammersmith Palais one night, for being pissed and lippy. After I'd given this cozzer reams of grief, he took me down to the cells at Shepherds Bush nick, then rolled his sleeves up and said "come on then you ****, let's see how hard you are now". Naturally I declined his offer of a "square go" on the not unreasonable grounds that he might get half a dozen of mates down to help him out, but I did respect him for the gesture as I meekly entered the cell.

    Them were the days
