Really Guys! So a woman who has been raped at knife point by a complete stranger is more of a victim than one who has been attacked by someone who is known to them!

If anything surely the latter is worse as there is a betrayal of trust involved.

If I was to play devils advocate with the Evans case it could be said that 2 people got drunk, made a stupid decision, regretted it the morning however only one of them is labelled a criminal. I don't believe this version myself. The facts are he IS a convicted rapist, he has never shown any remorse to the feelings of the woman involved and the fans of Utd. made it very clear they wanted nothing to do with him. dumb decision on their part to get involved.

Anyway!!!! Back to the OP, surely this is why clubs have press officers, I don't think DW is a racist, just careless.

the problem here is that physical assault is so much more common and there is nearly no stigma to it. when you bracket nuanced rape with overtly violent rape, there's nowhere for people to go to describe the difference other than defaulting to "proper rape"

yep he needs a filter. either he was ambushed or he welcomed the personal attention. if he wanted the attention then it's his own fault it's biting him in the arse, but people shouldn't be so up in arms about outdated opinions from old people.

There's no place for anti-semantic people in football.

Yeah 100% agree, however I don't think he is an anti-Semite, he has been quite contrite in his apologies, I think this is a case of a man from an older generation not thinking and having an unfortunate case of verbal diarrhoea.

A case of wait and think. He wants to be supportive, but should have stuck to Mackay knows he was wrong and is sorry. Joining in wasn't the way to go. When I was young, black people were referred to as coloured...it was just a word, my family weren't racist. I now don't use the term because people find it offensive. I think that was what Whelan meant, but shouldn't have said. I must admit that I never used the term chink...that was offensive even in the sixties.

Malky Mackay, racist or just indiscriminately offensive to everyone?

He didn't seem to mind Frazier Campbell's race.

His age shouldn't be relevant. He owns a relatively large football club including its diverse group of supporters which means he has lawyers, marketing consultants, PR representatives et al, so there should be no way he could make idiotic remarks like this by accident or carelessness. He knew exactly what he was saying and the effect it would have, so his age or any excuse that he just has ol' timey beliefs doesn't work.

The man is purposefully looking to fuel outrage and the subsequent coverage without ever crossing some definitive line of racial bias/intolerance.

He just rambled on a bit...should know when to shut up. Even his apology rambled a bit...said he had hundreds of Jewish friends. No, you don't. No one has hundreds of friends of any flavour.

Are you suggesting that young people are not foolish or racist...sadly, not always true.

of course not. i'm saying they were not brought up at a time when it was acceptable and are not liable to be weakened by age to the point they may unwittingly revert to old behaviour without knowing it or remembering in the moment that standards have changed.

he probably talks in shillings and gallons from time to time.

    mackay isn't particularly old.

Yes, a fair few of them. Some genuinely hold beliefs like those mentioned by Whelan but they are all smart enough to not air those views should they be interview with a liberal, national newspaper. The man has obviously had some some level of business success in his life to allow him to own a football club in England..do you honestly think he got that by pidgeonholing ethnic groups?.

not sure what you mean by this. sounds like you're saying he can't have held and acted on prejudicial beliefs in order to get where he is today. i'm not sure where that line would be going.

the old people i know apart from losing faculties, also lose their inhibitions, particularly if they are wealthy enough not to be beholden to anyone. dave whelan was always a blabbermouth, i only expect him to get worse. he would be well advised to retire from the public eye but i doubt he will let anyone tell him that.

edit: pidgeon holing ethnic groups isn't politically correct but ethnic groups tend to have cultural characteristics. people blindly against stereotyping are fools to themselves IMO.

What i mean by that is that he isn't stupid and knows full well what the reaction to his comments would be. He's had success in the business and sporting world so he knows what is acceptable and what isnt and he chose to make a controversial statement about jews to a newspaper. I don't know what Whelans ultimate goal is here but this isnt the same as some old fella making derogatory remarks in the privacy of his living room.

I expect the end game is he's stopped giving a **** what anyone thinks and he's just enjoying any attention he gets.

    I don't think there's a jewish conspiracy here.

He's not appointed Mackay to marshal his Aryan army.

edit: and yes there are some fundamentally stupid people who are very successful.

Saying that all Jews chase money is a stereotype, which in my experience is as far from the truth as it is possible to get. In my political activist days of my distant youth I knew a lot of Jewish people, most of whom were communists and didn't have two pennies to rub together. This, among other reasons, is why I am against racial and cultural stereotypes. Whatever their racial and cultural background, everyone is an individual and distinguishable from each other.
