It's not a case that Evans has a blanket ban from football, but he will surely find it almost impossible to find any club to take him. That's a ban in actuality...just not one with any legal standing. So there is no special legal case being made. He is not prevented from making a life or earning a living...he just probably won't be able to do it in a high profile job like football. May need to go abroad. My case has always been that Sheffield United should have waited for the appeal to be heard...ridiculous to say that they couldn't have predicted this.
1. I have no sympathy for Sheff United; before Evans was released from prison, the club had been given a petition with over 100,000 signatures on it asking that he is not allowed back to the club. No excuse for "not expecting the public reaction" 2. I predict that he will end up given a chance by a league 2 club and within 6 months of banging lots of goals in he is signed by a top league 1 or low/mid championship side.
Also there seems to be very little sympathy for the woman involved...she has been hounded by Evans' supporters. Is she able to build a career or earn a living whilst changing her identity twice. I cannot even imagine the stress she is under.
I can think of a League 2 side whose manager is looking to replace the whole team before tomorrow's game. If they sign Evans surely even the "best supporters in the world" would desert them?
I think teams will naturally be wary...no club want to their name appearing in the press for the wrong reason. So he has to offer something special as a player, which means he will need to play well below his ability. As I said, he should look abroad where the publicity will be less. Don't care what happens to him, but surely he would have a more enjoyable life in some sunny spot than in a non-League club here.
Couldn't disagree more. Rape is rape. A spokesperson for the East London Rape Crisis said the following and I couldn't word it better myself so I'll just direct you to their quote.
The Jew thing is patently unacceptable by today's standards. I don't get the Chink thing. Because someone kicked a guy while calling him Chink, does that mean everyone means to virtually kick him if they say it? Also don't get the uproar over a man raised in a bygone era saying things which were tame in his generation and aren't especially hateful in this one. How many people don't have a mildly racist grandparent?
well that's plainly bollocks. i'd much rather be raped gently in my sleep than have my bones broken and teeth knocked out while i'm screaming. Then again, as I don't drink, i wouldn't have the added mental distress of having made poor decisions under the influence and having to deal with that.
I'd rather not be raped at all. Rape is rape and just because in some cases it is less violent doesn't change a thing.
disease is disease. i'd rather have influenza than ebola. there's a lot of grey areas, not least when you are relying on humans making informed decisions.
H5N1(bird flu) is a influenza, so I would say both are just as bad. Rape and violent rape is still forcing yourself on some one. It will still lead to mental and physical scars in both cases.
Ha, common or garden influenza then. I'm not saying genuine rape isn't a bad thing in all its forms. i'm saying a stereotypical violent, non consensual act when the victim is fully competent but physically subdued is worse and deserves to be treated as such. Whether you need to give that a new label such as rape plus, i don't care. In Evans case, the matter boils down to whether you believe he was responsible for determining her lack of capacity to consent and i've not seen enough evidence to support that. From what i've seen, the jury convicted based on there being no independent evidence of consent or intent on the complainant's part and on the basis that he left via a fire exit, which i think might be a reasonable action for a man who has just been guilty of infidelity.
Sheffield United have lost all credibility in this issue. What did their board expect ? It smacks of `lets take him back into training and see what the reaction is`. If it blows over, then we`ll offer him a contract. I`m glad I`m not a Blades fan.
I've no problem with sheffield united over this even if i was convinced the convictionw as sound. They were asked to give him somewhere to train by the PFA and they obliged. even if there was already a petition against it, they could reasonably have expected it to blow over given that he wasn't being offered a squad number. Celebrities have thrown their weight around and made it impossible for them since.
Yeah I agree rape + violence is worse. On the Evans case, I will never know the full details of what happened and maybe he will be found not guilty in the re-trial. But until then he is a convicted rapist. The thing that has angered me tho is his refusal to say sorry, even if he said sorry the women felt that way. Or said sorry for getting into the situation in the first place, the harrassment of the victim has also been disgusting.
Understandable, but whether he's nice about the situation shouldn't have a bearing on whether he is determined to be guilty, though it might colour your opinion over his intentions on the night. Now i have to read the whole thread and find out when it turned from Whelan to rape. Dave hasn't raped anyone has he?
Rape is rape, but there's going to be a big gap in sentencing between a 16 year old having sex with a "consenting" 15 year old to an adult directly targetting a 12 year old and raping them with the threat of a knife.
