    Sunderland 3-2 Burnley.

Phoenix from the ashes, from behind, and won with my favourite SAFC goal ever.

I was drunk for about 5 days after, brilliant, and the atmosphere that night? Even thinking about it now almost brings tears.

We were a club that was dead, we were revived, and the we were back.

This game was the confirmation that Sunderland Association Football Club will never die.

When carlos scored it was lke being in the fulwell end again, ended up about 3 rows further forward across the seats, anybody grabbing anybody for a hug and the noise was incredible.

    Well,

I was main stand Roker wing, but i get your jest, it was absolute bedlam, i stood there just shouting 'YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES' for about 5 minutes.

I've barely felt such a rush of emotion at any time in my life, that game wasn't just another promotion, it was a symbolic moment in the rebirth of our club.

In time, people will start talking about that game like '73, 5 years, we're all proud of that, and Carlos screamer is where it all began.

Wonderful, wonderful nobody is ever taking that from me moment.

For atmosphere and excitement to me it has to be home to Man C in the 1973 FA Cup run. Although we had drawn with them on the Saturday we still weren't given much of a chance in the replay but just blew them off the park.

charlton play off was a heart stopper

the best game for atmosphere for me was the 1985 milk cup. we lost but i never saw a sad sunderland face all day at the game.

The cup final in 1973 was memorable for all of the obvious reasons and to be in Wembley for the first time was amazing. But, the two matches that still make me tingle are, the night match against Man City in the 73 cup run (It was my mates 18th birthday too!) and of course the roller coaster of emotions returning to Wembley for the 4 -4 against Charlton.

Wish i'd been around for '73, hopefully we'll have another day like that soon!

Can i nominate a second game, Reid's first home game against Sheffield United, and Russells late wind assisted goal.

If we'd have lost that game, we may well have hit the 3rd tier, and god knows where we'd be now, there'd be no SOL for sure.

The play off final is a given for most of us I think but, my other choice would be the Sheff Utd game during the play offs midweek game in the fog at SOL think we had to win 2-0 to get to that ill fated game against Charlton. Great night out and a very good game well worth the night off from work.

Agree about the sheff utd match in the play offs, best atmosphere I've experienced, it was so nervy and tense and the joy and relief at the end was amazing.

the other match i remember the most was the 1-0 against swindon when reidy first came in, it was basically a case of whoever won stopped up, smith scored a volley and we went home happy. it was an awful, scrappy match that just meant so much.

beating man city on the way to the cup in 73, mate getting given a spare ticket off a copper on horseback on way to ground otherwise not getting in, cheeky sod pretended he'd got his ticket pinched for semi and still managed to blag his way into the ground via the bobbies.
match against charlton was the biggest rollercoaster of a game ever for me.
wrexham away in about '79 when we needed a win, came back from a goal down, wilf rostron and alan brown i think, 3 sides of ground took up with us, gutted when we didn't go up.
Winning 3-2 from 2 down against man u in the clive walker era.
And although it was the skunks, the 1st 4-3 loss against liverpool when failed arsonist curly perm k keeegan threw most of his matches away was one of the most pulsating games i've ever seen

    Good calls.
I have said before about the Charlton game and the unbelievable range of emotions we went through that day.

The 73 final is my finest hour as a SAFC supporter.

Had memorable away days for the wrong reasons. (Fighting!)
Or the right reasons. (Scoring :p)
