I once had to do a two day training course a few years back for chugging. (Had to keep the job centre happy.) When they did a whole section on what to say if somebody asked are the people were drawing a wage from it, we were told to say no. Being we would be getting paid ourselves, this would have been a blatant lie. When I pointed this out, I was given the reply "so what." After that I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole and I certainly don't believe a word they say.

Sadly this does not surprise me. The UK and Ireland are known for giving generously with these big charity events and the vultures started circling a while back.

There are charity's I tend to trust more than others like Sue Ryder or the Salvo army brass band you see in town centers. Like many on here giving to charity is not the issue, it's finding the ones that you can trust.

I see Adele has been slated in today's Sun by Geldof for not taking part and not responding to his '100 phone calls', why the hell should she? Who the f*ck does he think he is passing moral judgement on anyone who doesn't dance to his tune? The bloke can be a Grade 'A' c*nt at times...

Lol, fair play and also thank you Adele. It's going to be testing having this single rammed down our throats on every radio station for the next two months, but a bullet dodged in my opinion as she won't be warbling over it also...

Cheers Sooper, that's cheered me a little!

Geldof can do one. Taaratubby is supposed to be in training for the Newcastle game, not out prancing around collecting money for charity ;)

Good point, it's worth a handful of my spare change if it goes to alter even one poor souls life for the better.

I find it a bit rich given their history of employing *****s, are the BBC really the best judges of what children need?

Judging by the way he dresses and wears his hair, I think it's fairly safe to say that he's given all of his money to charity.

This should give you a good idea.......... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ion-giving-tiny-percentage-funds-charity.html

The levels of cynicism on here are quite breathtaking.

    Well done everyone.

Do you really think that Geldof has done this to line his own pockets?

I think he is a decent man who just wants to help however he can.

The other participants have just responded to his requests.

Thank **** for that. I was beginning to think I was in a parallel universe.

This thread shows so much about this country - the cynicism, the paranoia, the 'cut the tall poppies down' mentality, the instant assumption that motivations are selfish, 'somebody else' always has the responsibility to fix things. At the same time I see elsewhere acts of generosity - of time, cash and talent - from people who are often hard pressed themselves - which reminds me that we're not all hopelessly lost, common decency still exists.

    - of course governments could sort a lot of this crap out, but they won't and what individuals, including celebrities, do can make a difference to other individuals' lives.

    - of course Children in Need is propaganda, but you only have to see the impact some of the cash has on some kids' lives in the little vignettes to see, as Nines says, a bit of loose change can help

    - of course Bono is a twat, but his One Foundation is aimed at raising awareness and influencing policy, not distributing aid

    - of course another Band Aid is cheesy, and as several of the participants have said its sad that its being done yet again, but if it pays for a couple of doctors and nuses and a bit of education to bring ebola under control, its worth it.

If you don't have the cash to donate that's nothing to be ashamed of. If you donate based on criteria of your own, that makes sense. If you give time and energy to help, brilliant. If you think the tax you pay is enough (and I'm proud that the UK has not cut its overseas development budget during the recession, and that we are one of the very few countries to actually deliver on its promises in times of crisis and disaster), that's your call. If all you do is moan and criticise the efforts of others, just hope you don't have to rely on the not for profit help of others at any stage. because then you'll feel a right twat.

This country is unbelievably generous when it comes to donating to things like children in need etc.

I have helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds for deserving causes during my life, but I truly resent anyone trying to guilt trip me into donating to anything.
It's my choice and mine alone.

Of course it's your choice Col, don't buy the record if you don't want to.

Do you agree with Sooper that it was a selfish act on behalf of those that made it?

    Don't
There's no way of knowing what individual motives are. I suspect some may be after publicity but let's face it, most of them don't need more money so maybe most are genuine.

I think he goes to bed early as he has an early start.

However, I'm not too sure what's happened to this thread? I agree that it started off with a degree of cynicism. ( Ok, quite a lot of cynicism. ) I doubt though that you'll find anyone who has posted on this thread hasn't donated in one way or another at some point in their lives. Regardless of their feelings towards 'Band Aid' 'Children in need' etc. It's a bit like 'Pascal's Wager.' When you hand over your hard earned I think there's a degree of understanding that only a small percentage might make it too it's intended destination. Even if you give a couple of quid say, to a homeless person at Waterloo station you must wonder if he's really going to buy a cup of tea or a sandwich with it or is he going to buy a couple of cans of special brew. Personally my thinking is that yes he'll spend it on beer or some other mind numbing substance that gets him through the hell he's going through but he's still alive so some of it must go on some kind of sustenance.

The same applies to the higher end charities. Only a bit of it might get through, but I'll settle for that if it even makes the tiniest bit of difference. As I stated earlier, I'll not miss a few sheckles but to someone else it could be a life changer.

As for the OP, it doesn't help when we read this kind of thing. Ironically being published today http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...t-cat-pay-appalling-waste-hidden-agendas.html

When I worked in the West-End at Soho Fire Station, our chosen charity was Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital*. We used to stand out at the front of the station on weekend nights with our buckets. We collected thousands of pounds for them this way. Some people used to tell us to '**** off' and that they payed enough in taxes etc ( No judgement from me, it was their right. ) but most people were brilliant. We then used to take the money on the fire engine straight to the hospital asap. This way 100% of the money raised got to it's intended target. No middle men there taking their cut. That is the one of the best ways to donate.

    * Other charities are available.

Nothing bad happened to the thread Nines, it was nasty from the start.

Sooperhoop was around long enough to post on another thread, but chose not to reply to me.
