2 of those are striker cover. A pelle injury will arguably leave us short on the wing Unless we are in for a striker. But it might be easier getting Redmond in to fight for and have a better chance of a starting place than a striker who is guaranteed a bench slot
We could but I would be stunned if we did , purely because pelle was only signed 6 months ago. I can't invisage signing an obvious threat after such a short period of time and good performances will work for morale. But koeman knows pelle's psyche better than any of us so we will see what he does.... But on that note, what striker who can play pelle's type of striker role, not be guaranteed a start and be affordable to us (fee and wages) is actually out there at the moment? Anyone got any ideas ?
Liverpool have an England striker they rarely play. Perhaps he'd like to spend his last couple of seasons at one of the top four clubs.
Had a look at target men per the main football games. Yussuf poulsen seems like someone we should be looking at. Playing in German second division (for the moneybags club) is 6ft 3 and can apparently play out wide as well. Ability to play wide should be something we are looking for in a pelle back up so they have other avenues to challenge for the team
Unfortunately he is pretty much done. Only way he will be able to maintain the form we need would be regular game time...
I would like to know how these rumours get out. The only sources are Saints (unlikely), a mole (possibly), player's agent (more likely) or writer's thoughts/imagination (also likely). There are a lot of players out there that we have been previously linked with...these make easy copy, being not totally out of the realms of possibility. As for the question of Redmond's suitability, I will go along with the line that if Saints think he is 'our type of player' I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Not that we are always right, but we have a good strike rate with improving players and having them fit into the team.
Some people moaned when we signed Pelle and Long. Enough said. I trust the scouting network at Saints, even more so now. If we do sign him, I'll be confident he will be a good addition.
The price is raised as another issue. It does seem, that whilst we are not one of the super rich teams, we are seen as a big player at the next level down. We now have to pay the higher price to get a player, but this is offset by our ability to add extra value to a player....like putting a Waitrose label on a pack of tomatoes.
If we couldn´t hang on to him and he had to go anywhere, then Saints would be top of my list - definitely a Premier League player in the making.
He's contracted to 2017. we're unlikely to be able to get him off the books easily. Any contribution to his wages is something though.
Not to mention Bertrand. It's not just about putting trust in the our scouting network and decision makers etc though (although clearly this is important, and a well made point). It's also about reserving judgement on a player until they've had a chance to pull the shirt on for a few games for us. And then judge what they do for us, in our system, with our coaches, amongst our players.
Any news on the Mitchell leaving transfer? Didn't want to put it on the relevant thread in case I got people excited that there was some news.
I have to say I am pretty stunned that anyone would think we would sign a player that wouldn't be a threat to the position of any outfield player, unless it was a youngster for the future. Sorry, but that is very short sighted. Any signing should be made with a view to play first team football. The fact Pelle was signed 6 months ago is irrelevant. If Pelle hits bad form and gets dropped, the player coming in has to be able to them be good enough to keep him out the team.
Pelle gives everything...he looked a physical wreck after the Leicester game. Well done to him for that, but does suggest we need a player that is not just a back up to him, but will also start on occasion on merit. The lack of a Christmas break may hit some of our players and I am especially concerned about Pelle playing every game (especially when you consider the quality of the opposition both before and after Xmas).
So 3 players to cover two positions and you can't see why we want to add more depth? Can't count Rodriguez we haven't a clue when he will be back to his best or if he will stay.
If we're seriously pursuing both cup competitions yeah we need another but it's got to be someone who can potentially play in several positions as well as up front so they won't just be twiddling their thumbs while Pelle is fit. Long has been an ideal player in that respect. He's played lone man up front before IIRC.
