Aaron Wilbraham had a few things to say about the behaviour of Swindon's players after today's match http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristo...am-speaksout/story-24539702-detail/story.html … #bristolcity

Bristol City striker Aaron Wilbraham was far from impressed with the antics of certain Swindon Town players in this weekend’s M4 derby at the County Ground.

Although Michael Smith scored a fine individual goal 12 minutes from time to settle a stormy contest, the sending off of City captain Wade Elliott and the behaviour of Town skipper Nathan Thompson after the final whistle provided the main talking points afterwards.

Thompson made a point of dancing in front of the 3,000 travelling fans after the final whistle in an undisguised attempt to provoke them.

And City players were also upset at the reaction of Jack Stephens, who was involved in the incident which led to Elliott receiving is marching orders after only two minutes.

Referring to Thompson’s post-match behaviour, Wilbraham said: “For one of their lads to do that in front of our fans was really out of order.

“Spending a good 10 to 15 seconds in front of our fans waving his arms about as though they’d won the league was disappointing to say the least.

“Our fans were brilliant all afternoon and I thought they did well to keep their calm in the face of that kind of incitement.”

Wilbraham also took issue with Stephens, who seemed to go down easily following a coming together with Elliott and then made the most of the situation to get City’s captain sent off.

“There were a few other things that went on as well and the reaction of their player (Jack Stephens) for the sending off left a lot to be desired,” added Wilbraham.

“He’s supposed to be a big, tough centre-half and you don’t expect to see him rolling about on the ground and making a meal of it.

“It’s even more disappointing when he’s up and running around as though nothing has happened just a couple of minutes later.

“We’ve watched it back on the video and it was definitely not a sending off. In fact, I don’t think it even warranted a yellow card, let alone a sending off.

“It is really disappointing to lose our unbeaten run in that kind of situation and I don’t think we would have lost had we had 11 men.

“Their lad has put his hands on Wade’s shoulders, so he has stood his ground as we all do in those situations. He’s gone into the back of Wade and then rolled about and made a meal of it.

“It’s disappointing to see a fellow professional do that. Wade is an experienced player and he is not going to throw elbows around or do anything like that. The linesman has a good view of it, which is why we cannot understand why he has made the decision he has made.

“It ruined our game-plan, but it also ruined the match and ruined the day for our fans.”

City responded well to going down to 10 men and Wilbraham felt they more than matched Swindon until inevitably tiring in the second half.

He said: “We played good football with 10 men in the first half and were still creating chances, but we tired with the workload towards the end of the second half against their 11 men.

“We really showed our team spirit and were unfortunate not to hang on We kept our shape well and kept them out.. They didn’t look like scoring and it has taken a moment of individual brilliance to break us down.

“If you are going to lose a game, then far better in those circumstances than playing poorly and getting beaten heavily.”

I am 'looking forward' to seeing the incident on tonight's Football League show. I was still outside. Waiting to get in the ground while Swindon and City fans goaded and threw missiles at each other behind a line of Devonshire police.

A truly horrible afternoon in all respects.

Gives you a good reason to stuff them at Ashton Gate.

Did any of your fans comment after your recent match with Swindle about how easily they hit the deck?
This is our second match in a row with them where they have done this. English Third Division getting more like Serie A or South America!

Sorry Redprint unless you was there to witness the intention of the Swindle players and see how shocking the ref was then Wilbs has more to comment than you.

I missed the Elliott incident so without seeing it can't comment if it was a sending off or not, all I saw was their player rolling about on the floor, the ref 10'yards away went to the linesman before he sent him off.

We all know you didn't rate Cotterill and possibly been waiting for this to happen. But apart from Wagstaff's moment of stupidness the team I saw yesterday played with more passion and desire for each other than any team I've seen for years.

You can make snide comments about ice in the veins but things happen. Their player blatantly went into either Williams or Cunningham by the corner flag. Which should of been a sending off the difference was our players didn't react like they stood on a land mine.
Their forward was a ****ing disgrace and constantly niggling and getting in people's faces trying to get them to react it took to the 40-42 minute before the cock of an official realise.

If you was there fair enough, but the ref the other week was terrible which I didn't think it was until yesterday be proved he's not the worse I've seen.

    We will bounce back.

Sending off looked weak but Elliott is the captain and needs to lead by example. He should not be involved in a "handbags" incident as only bad can come of these as he found out. Total over reaction by the Swindle player and he should be ashamed of himself but unfortunately as we witnessed at the world cup, this type of behavior is now almost accepted at professional games.

Let's not dwell but re-focus on the next unbeaten run. We will have our chance to get revenge at AG.

He's just a wind up merchant, waiting for people to bite, ok we lost, under the circumstances, to play that long with ten men, and only get beat by a single goal against a good side, you have to give credit to all the players, Waggy included (Rp's next LJ), and his assessment of Cotterill defending his players, which all managers do, makes him look like a bit of a D**k head.

No nothing on our site though they did complain about us being a physical side when we beat them last season, strange that really considering they twice as many sent off than us last season.
They seem to have a chip on their shoulders and I still can't believe were they are in the league with Cooper as manager.

RP - I can't tell if you really believe this or are just a WUM?

Incidents happen in football - some decisions go your way, some (as in the case of this one) don't.

Whether the sending off was right or not, our team played for 87 minutes with 10 men - gave a good account of themselves, and nearly came away with a point from a team that are now second - I'm struggling to see how this makes them "bottlers"

Have a listen to Venables about the England/Scotland game.
People in the game understand you play with your head no matter the provocation.
That's why Cotterill's mantra all last week was 'Ice in your veins' etc etc.

I know Elliott was provoked and it was a bloody harsh decision.
However he, above all others should know, you never give a ref a decision to make.

'our team played for 87 minutes with 10 men' and did their best I grant you.

Bottlers - refer to their brains - our lot lost it soon as the whistle blew.
They were still at it in the tunnel after the game.

PS - I'm hoping we, fans, players and all at BCFC can channel our extreme frustration the right way.
And beat Preston this w/e easily.
Next May we may look back to last Saturday and say that game really focused us all to achieve promotion.

It's classic deflection, and it'll work a treat because of how Swindon acted during the game.

If anything, it's the best possible way for our winning streak to end. We held off Swindon Town with ten players and only lost by a single goal, and if anything this defeat has strengthened the team far more than a win ever could. The club and fans now feel wronged, and you can bet that our next opponents will let out a collective gulp as we look to get our next victory.

I imagine our appeal will be successful, so this leaves the club with the task of trying to win our upcoming games, and hopefully going to Swindon in April with not only revenge in our sights, but our next season in the Championship. Personally, I couldn't think of anything better than celebrating promotion against them the next time we play.

On what grounds do you think our appeal will be successful? Has anyone seen it anywhere apart the SKY pictures, because as I said on the Red Card thread those pictures are inconclusive and it that case the FA are likely to stand by the ref.

That's ridiculous. I understand what you're saying but Wade's actions were so small that if you go around avoiding doing that, you'd be avoiding all tackles/50:50s all game!

As an aside, I was watching Gilllete soccer Saturday before the game and they interviewed SC, I notice immediately that he came across as appearing stressed. he was very direct with his answers to the guy interviewing him to the point of rudeness and he did the 'ice in the veins' spiel.. it was a very different Cotterill to the relaxed one interviewed by Beagrie in the other televised games..

I reckon there was a bit going on before the game too..

'you'd be avoiding all tackles/50:50s all game'

So Elliott was sent off for a tackle/50:50 was he.
    Ridiculous.

'Wade's actions were so small' -
I know and hope the red to be rescinded, but you give an official a decision to make and the first mistake is down to one person, the player.
The tw*t official compounds the mistake.
