I could see why Mitchell would want that job. Comolli was saying a few days ago that Tottenham had almost no scouting at all. And they badly need a clear out of at least 5 players. So this would be an interesting challenge for him getting to work with Pochettino and building a team and perhaps a whole scouting/recruitment operation from near-scratch. As for Saints, we'll have to see. Many of our staff have been getting poached due to our success just like the players. Not sure whether we will survive or not, but there's very little we can do about it so we just have to keep carrying on.
Exactly. All the talk about "why would (insert name) leave us when we are on such an exciting journey, or aiming for champions league football" totally misses the point. We won't or aren't able to pay the same level of wages that even Spurs are paying and with that in mind we will continue to lose staff and players. This is what we are up against when it comes to challenging the bigger clubs. Having said that, I believe that it is possible that in any one season (like this one for eg) we could build a team that's capable of a sustained challenge, but that team will then be picked off like it was after last season.
Fran - don't bank on it Our only chance of hanging onto our top players is to qualify for the CL. This will increase revenue by circa £25m initially which will allow some form of additional payments to out top players to keep them in the club for another season. Sadly its all about money as Its Only A Game said
Yes the money is important, but players also make decisions on coaches and career progression too. You only have to look at Saints to see that. I can be pretty cynical, but I don't believe every player is a mercenary, that's too simplistic for me.
I believe that decisions about winning honours (and playing for a particular coach) only come after the right money has been sorted. Do you really think that those players that left in the summer did so for CL football? I obviously don't know what salaries they are all on at their new clubs but would think they have at least doubled the amount they were getting with us. JRod is supposedly keen to join Spurs who aren't even in the CL, I don't believe that Poch is that more attractive to work for than Ron. Simplistic or not, it has to be the wonga. Champions League? You're 'avin a larf.
Well you've definitely got a point re champions league, although Lallana (spit) would have us believe this was the reason, and didn't Ralph have a dig at fast tracking to the champions league? Anyway, chasing honours I can understand, because if your good enough, you want to test yourself, just so happens they pay more too. I'm possibly just being idealistic, as I like to think that money isn't the only motivator in the world. And Christ, their wages, how much does one need?
since the new TV deal that isn't the problem it was before, the biggest problem is probably agents pumping it into their heads that is the case. I think I might put a few quid on the only southampton players from 2012-2013 in next years CL are the ones that never left.

garysfc - I completely agree with you. Like us hear mortals, if someone offers you a substantial increase in wages then its "Goodbye, been great working with you!" Footballers are no different but they do try and dress it up to look like ambition, want to play CL, win trophies etc but it's purely down to money. Look at Luke Shaw, playing every game with Saints, looked after by the club for years, worshipped by the fans, medically sound due to superior training science and medical team, international recognition but only on a mere £20k a week (poor thing!). A big club come along and offer him reportable somewhere between £120-160k a week and he is out the door before the ink has dried on the resignation. Do I blame him....NO Shame that the move has meant weight issues, public criticism from his manager, being dropped from the team, constant injury issues, criticism from the fans over his form and transfer fee etc etc. However when his wage slip comes through every month do you really think he cares? No I guess that Paul Mitchell will be in a similar position regarding a substantial increase in wages and will deal with what Levy will throw at him as it occurs. Good luck to him but I do hope the Saints solicitors will be looking at his contract and monitoring his future activity
Would it be unreasonable to say I think he's a Judas bastard and I hope he crashes and burns with his new **** club?
I don't feel as strongly as I would about a player...and even they have the right to change jobs. He's too young to consider Saints his last move. If you ignore the money, he may have felt the interesting bit of his job here was over and he saw Spurs as a fresh challenge.
I am sure in les reeds interview earlier this year he said there was a team of 20 people scouting and recruiting,so all in all Paul was just a cog in the recruitment side. And with our track record this summer we will replace him with someone better.
