Gus Poyet has told Sunderland they must stop bulk-buying players in the transfer window.

The coach reckons his club keeps "starting again" each window by stocking up the squad with up to eight new stars.

After holding a transfer summit with Director of Football Lee Congerton and owner Ellis Short in the last week, Poyet is making plans for the next couple of seasons.

That means splashing out on one or two top quality recruits to bed into a well-drilled squad that is hard to beat.

He said: "It looks like unfortunately in the last two years we've always been starting again with another seven, eight or nine players, then another eight, nine or ten players.

"There's got to be a moment where you need to add that certain player who's going to make a difference. A player who is so important that you are going to become a good team for sure. Maybe not at the level of (Cesc) Fabregas and (Diego) Costa, but that idea.

"When we achieve that we're going to be very, very difficult to play against because you're going to have a certain style and power in the team that is totally different to the rest.

"My idea was to plan for this season or next - of course in the Premier League - because of the length of the contract. I don't want to go too far ahead and I don't want to be starting again next year."

Asked about his relationship with Short he added: "I talk to him and we've got an idea. We share a vision but you've got to be realistic.

"You need to keep proving yourself. It's not that easy to say, 'Yeah, go on - ten years, whatever happens to you we stick with you.' It sounds great but it doesn't happen in football.

"You need to at least be showing with results that it's working."

Don't tell us show us. Di Canio, mad Marty and Bruce all said the same ****e and didn't follow through. Instead we got the likes of Cabral, Graham and Elmo amongst other utter dross.

I like Poyet but the bloke likes to talk and talk in cliches at that. Boring.

    he does indeed mate.

We genuinely do need some quality in midfield, we need CB's, we need a wing back each side.

As Connor is ****, and Jozy is worse, we also need 2 strikers.

Like it or lump it Gus, in reality form we need 5 minimum to avoid another close call.

What I will say is we have added some decent players, and the back up is better than previously, but in reality only Catts, PVA, Vito, Rodwell & Fletcher would interest teams above us IMO.

Maybe Johnson were it not for his everlasting drink/weight/fitness issues.

Overall, we have a lower average squad, just about good enough for 14th or so.

I agree with what he says but like you say though, let's start putting it into practice.

I think MON tried this way forward with AJ and Fletch, but it is not a guarantee of success, but it is the right way if it works, as is the other way as Newcastle and Southampton have showed in recent years, it all boils down to buying the right players. I think Gus has done very well so far, results, are the ultimate deciders in success or failure.

Code for, roll your sleeves up for potential tough season, again. We are not addressing the problems we have, that are plain to see. If we buy from abroad can we buy one who isn't just gonna sit on the sidelines either not good enough or injury prone.

Sorry for negative spin but usual drivel, quality hmmm lets see

Well I think, when asked these questions, he should just do what Joe Kinnear did and swear at the press instead of answering it with stuff we all want to hear.

OK so it's cliche'd but what is he supposed to say tell me? is he supposed to say "well I'm not bothered who we sign as I'm on £x million a year"? What exactly do people want to hear from Gus? He is contractually obliged to speak to the press and has to say something so what do you want to hear? Bullshit? Rubbish that wouldn't interest us?

Personally I like to hear this. He has a vision and is trying to put it into practice. All good news IMO

3 quality players needed ultimately to push us on.

Centre back, attacking centre midfielder and a verstaile forward whos quick and can play wide aswell as through the middle.

    Wallet out Mr Short

I'd say 2 strikers and a center back

We have 10 midfielders on the books, and I think having Giacc and Alvarez back will make a huge difference to us

2 strikers?? <yikes> Gus only plays one, we are already accomodating Wickham on the wing... Are we buying two strikers to sit on the bench? Or relegating Fleetch (arguably one of our best players this season) to the bench?

Personally I think we're actuall relatively set up front and in midfield. We should be looking to sign a young, decent CB (apparently the lad at Celtic is good but never seen him play personally so not sure if he could hack it in the prem?) and and full back (either side as it seems Rev can cover both).

If we can't sort Connor's contract situation by Jan then I'd say we should also go for Joel Campbell on loan as backup to Fletch.

Can't see we need much more than that personally?

Hard to tell what we need without knowing myself the likely hood of Giacc, Alvarez or Coatez struggling all season with repetition injuries. one, two or all three could ideally need Ops to get over their problems, without knowing it's really hard to know what we need. Leftback deffo.

Graham has gone out on loan.

Either Jozy or Wickham will leave in January imo.

So yes, we need 2 strikers so we will have 4 at the club.

Christ I hope it's Jozy!! Alright Wickham isn;t exactly doing the business on the pitch but he's still miles ahead of Jozy (IMO)!

FWIW - I think we need a central defender, Left Back and a striker. I think, once all of our injuries have died down I think our midfield is well stocked

"I'm not prepared to talk about transfer targets at the moment. Lee, Margaret, Ellis and I are talking about how to improve the squad and once the transfer window opens we'll make our moves. I'd prefer to concentrate on working with the squad I have until then as they are perfectly capable of achieving our goals for the season as it stands."

No promises made that he can fall foul of. Offering reassurance that work is being done towards improving the squad. Placing his confidence in the players he already has.

That took me a few seconds to come up with. I'd hope as a professional manager he could come up with a little better. Leaves the cliches for Andy Townsend Gus.

you could argue that he was successful, both still in and around the first team, two good players

Only joking, we need 4 as Giacch, Alvaraz, Coates and now PVA leave us 4 short. This is football, our squad is light .
