There are a lot of jobd he would not be allowed to do after his conviction. His CRB check would stop him from working with children or vulnerable adults for a start. So if he is not considered safe to coach any child under 16 and would be banned from doing so by the FA I find it difficult to see a justification to allow him to play such a public role as a player.

He will not be allowed to teacher or coach or be a career with his record so he should not be able to influence others. It should be remembered that even though he was convicted of rape the only apology he has given is to his girlfriend for cheating on her. At no time has he said he is sorry for what he did to the victim. Indeed the victim has been hounded by others and has had to change her name twice as a result of this. She is currently on the witness protection scheme because of threats made against her, not by Chad Evens but by supporters of Sheffield United.

It has been reported as well that the Sheffield fans are singing his name in a variation of the Stephen Fletcher song He Scores When He Wants but with more offensive words. So it can not be said that him playing is not having an effect.

It seems many people who are rightly disgusted with this crime are quite happy to commit justifiable homicide in an act of retribution

I'm all for punishing the crime that people commit with whatever punishment they deserve.
For me it doesn't matter if Ched is a ****e footballer, a plumber or even works in a corner shop.
If he was guilty he might have accepted it and got on with his life, but this lad is fighting to clear his name because he feels that there has been an injustice.
Before you all go ballistic, yes I would want to cut his balls off and play conkers with them had it been my daughter.
Had it been my daughter that he had humped and I found out that she had fabricated the whole story to get a pay day I would be mighty pi**ed off with her.

Mate, he was convicted of rape, trying to clear his name because his actions have been costly or he is trying to resurrect his career is a bit like after the lord mayors show.

He has had appeals against both sentence and conviction turned down by the single judge and then by the panel of three judges, so he will never clear his name. The only expression of regret he has shown was to apologise to his girlfriend, his family and his girlfriends family, no mention of his victim.

He is an arrogant bar steward on a damage limitation exercise <ok>

He took advantage of a drunk girl and that was a disgusting thing to do. However, as far as I can see, he's been convicted and done his time, so back into society he goes. He is obviously not doing himself any favours by not admitting that what he did was wrong. But if Harry Roberts is getting let back into society (wrongly IMO) I don't see how you can't let Evans back in. If he's in, you can't prevent him from accepting employment as a footballer, if any club is prepared to offer it to him.

I'm going to stick my oar in and join the unpopular camp on this one.

In my opinion he has done his time and now should be allowed to get on with his life to the best of his ability. Rape is one of the most disgusting crimes out there, but I do believe that once his time is served then he should be free to work, in this case as a footballer. Any restrictions on what he does should be based on safety and risk, not on popularity (or lack of). Being a footballer does not pose a significant risk to anybody, unlike if he was in a position of trust with vulnerable people. I have my doubts about his conviction, but he is convicted and needs to be treated as such unless he manages to clear his name. If people don't like the idea of him being free to play football so soon after his conviction then to me the issue is with the length of sentence rather than what happens afterwards.

Footballers are not role models and neither should they be. As a father, I don't want my son to ever be in a situation where he is on a night out and then has to wonder 'what would Ched Evans do?'. **** that. He should have enough parenting from me and from other strong role-models in his life to already know what is right and wrong. Footballers are footballers. We admire them for their skill with a football not for their life choices.

If it was my daughter/wife/sister then no doubt I might feel different, but that is why we have others to choose sentences for the good of justice rather than revenge.

^^^^ This exactly Sid, he has the opportunity to rebuild his career if he can persuade a club to employ him, just the same as any convicted prisoner on release with their chosen employment.

His conviction is never spent which means that must disclose it for the rest of his life when applying for jobs and he is on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life so he is restricted by the bounds of that process.

He also has a number of licence conditions because of the nature of his offence, which will protect the public to a certain extent and a licence recall if he breaches them or re-offends so it isn't going to be plain sailing.

FWIW - I believe Rape should be punished with life every time. Why should one rape be worse than another?

But I also do not believe, looking at all of the evidence that there is, that this girl was so drunk? No way. You look at her walking in the hotel and she's sober as I am now. She tries to sell her story to the papers - stinks of a woman thinking "Oh he's a footballer.... Ca---Ching" to me. Just my opinion though. As I said previously, when working in the courts as a trainer, I saw loads of cases where it was him against her with no witnesses and only evidence was what they took from the woman after the "rape" and the lad got locked up for rape even though there was no evidence to prove either way - Only a minor amount of the lads got off in these cases. If she's that drunk, how does she know that she didn't say "Yes" to him? Too many flaws for me

That may be your view Marcus, but Evans was found guilty by a jury, sentenced by a judge, had appeals against conviction and sentence denied by a single judge, then a panel of three judges, the evidence of his guilt could not be any more conclusive than that

This is why I was surprised that Evans was found guilty! Unless there is cctv footage of her being dragged into the hotel kicking and screaming or obviously semi conscious then I cant see how anything can be proved either way. What was the clinching evidence that resulted in him being found guilty? Like I say, he is guilty as far as I'm concerned, unless proved otherwise later, but there must have been some damning evidence that got him locked up! There must have been something that got rid of any doubt in the jurors minds!

When did the lass try and sell her story to the paper????

It is rape if the victim is deemed not to have the capacity to consent, that includes being drunk.

There must have been conclusive evidence for the jury to have found him guilty because the level of proof in criminal law is beyond reasonable doubt as opposed to civil law, which is the balance of probability.

The judges comments and transcript of the trial will be available on the internet if anyone wants to do a search.

I really hate that phrase because it's such a grey area. At what point is a girl too drunk to consent? At what point is the bloke drunk enough that they are both mutually too drunk to accept, so no one has been wronged? In my opinion, a yes is a yes no matter what, if you don't have the capacity to say "no" after a few drinks, don't drink. Simple as that.

I would be shocked if Evans has actually raped this girl, he's done a daft thing but rape, I doubt it. Bird sleeps with one guy, who she says she consented to, then his mate, who she claims she doesn't remember so must have been raped. Doesn't add up.

Anyway, I think he absolutely should be allowed to put himself back on the market as a footballer, he's served his time after all. However, no club in their right mind would take him on, if I was the owner of a club he wouldn't get anywhere near. I doubt his future is in football.

As a side note, for a footballer his bird is rats.

So what would peoples reactions be if he signed for Sunderland or Newcastle? Would those who think he's done his time be ok with that?
