He's got the right not to wear a poppy on his shirt, it's not mandatory and he has his reasons.

Fair play to him. His right not to wear it, and I can understand his reasoning.

Also, fair play for him for addressing the issue maturely and appropriately, understanding the potential for media fall-out.

What a well written letter. He has dealt with the issue in a mature and sensible manner. Anyone know what the outcome was?

He should have said it like this earlier is my only criticism. He left it to get bad the last few years, even having little digs at people on twitter. Now he has given a valued reason he should be left alone, it is his right after all.

Yep. Dave Whelan accepted his personal reasoning, thanked him for the letter and he played without a poppy on his shirt last night. <ok>

I think most people favour wearing a poppy...it is a unifying and respectful thing to the British, but no one should be coerced. The people who died in these wars died for freedom...it would be wrong to use the poppy to remove someone's freedom.

I saw people knitting those on Countryfile...a good way to raise charity money from a hobby.

Wasn't it a woman who had been also been raped, so felt she couldn't condone his presence.
