Poyet fears there is a lingering mentality of acceptance at Sunderland. "It is a problem that we have been there for four years, fighting for that," he said. "It is my challenge to change that - to not have the feeling at this football club or the city that we are going to be always fighting down there."
I agree with poyet but he should have a word with Short because it's him what just wants to finish 4 from bottom all the time. no ambition at all from Mr ****ing Short.
Mr Short has seen alot of money spent on players ranging between average to ****e. I think we are 8th in the 'amount spent' table in the last 5 years. When you consider our league positions and how far we've gone back, thats shocking! Personally i am not suprised he has tightened his purse strings.....i would! I wouldnt like to plow my money into a team who, at best, are aiming for 10th! Dont know why anybody would want to own a footy team! If I had money of rich arab proportions I still wouldnt buy Sunderland....and I support them!
Bruce broke even, PDC broke even, Poyet has spent about 17m, yes O'Neil wasted abit of money but the last 2 summers we have spent **** all. when you sign championship players, sign free transfers then you always be fighting to stay up.
Bruce broke even but as a result was left with a **** team full of players on high wages and long contracts. I suspect our tightness over the past 2 seasons has been as a result of that. Any money saved in the transfer windows probably had to go on the wages of players who just werent good enough. Di canio and Poyet have suffered as a result. As far as this season goes, we have spent just as much as other teams around us. Our failing this season is not how much we have spent, its how threadbare our squad is. I agree, we should have spent more money this season, not breaking the bank on quality players though, just to bolster our squad, especially in defence! Whether that was Poyets, Congertons or Shorts fault, I dont know, but it could send us down!
Short's obviously has been focused on getting us running in the black and clearing the debt, he's managed both and I believe he was right to tighten the purse as it's for the best for the club. But this summer was the summer he needed to dig deep with all our rivals flashing the cash and improving. He didn't and we're going to struggle as a result. Flirt with relegation often enough and sooner or later you'll get relegated and the Championship is tough to get out of these days. I think his caution is a massive massive risk. Got to spend in January.
You can't blame it all on bruce tho. Mr Short & Mr Quinn gived out the contracts. plus we haven't learned anything because Larrson & O'Shea have got new contract. with the new TV money we should be spending more sorry. you are right about we have spent just as much as the other teams around us & the table doesn't lie. I blame Short for not giving poyet enough money to spend & it's as simplr as that pal.
Not a matter of blame for me Raw, Regarding our Summer Budget it was a risk either way. Just think he should have gone the other way and spent a bit more. understand why he hasn't. Still 100% behind Short.
Just 4 years? We've had a 40,000+ stadium for what, 12 years now, and we still have a survivalist mentality? We've got gates most clubs outside of the top 4 or so would dream of. Our problem, pure and simple is geography. The north east is seen as the back of beyond but foreigners have heard of Newcastle and they can sign them, we can't. If we had a decent scouting and negotiating team perhaps we'd get better players in. We will always struggle to get the sort of signings we need until we can asomehow can show potential quality signings that we aren't a perennial relegation team. Roy Keane said as much when he was here, and on this, and probably only this. I agree with.
I seem to remember Niall taking abut crowds of over 40,000 and the benefits they would bring:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/sunderland/8219282/Sunderlands-lack-of-crowds-means-big-money-signings-are-unlikely-says-chairman-Niall-Quinn.html Paradoxically, since this article our performances have nosedived but our crowds have increased. So, it's interesting that we are now signing players of a much lower grade. Are we being shortchanged, if you pardon the pun?
If we can establish ourselves as a top 8 team I think we will attract better players, but if were fighting relegation every season we will only attract average at least which is what is happening now, you have to be lucky with signings, look at Liverpool with Balotelli, and yet Southampton have signed players who have turned out better than expected, I don't think any of our strikers are any good, they will get the odd goal and have a purple patch like Wickham had at the end of last season. If we sign a Marquee signing it could be the lift we need.
S That's pretty much what I meant by our scouting and negotiation team. I don't think they're good enough. We need someone who can sell ice cream to eskimo's to get those marque signings in. Ballotelli was a massive panic buy! What the **** were Liverpool thinking?
I think he will and I think we will be safe come the end of the season, but it will be a tough ride as our annually fixed fixture hurdle almost guarantees.
