Isn't Halloween originally a Christian thing dedicated to dead saints and martyrs and stuff? How the **** did we get from that to OLM's house?
The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays dates back to the Middle Ages and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval Christian practice of souling, when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2). It originated in Ireland and Britain.
My girlfriend is dressing up as a 'Zombie Schoolgirl' tonight. This involves basically a schoolgirl uniform, with fake blood and make up that looks like flaps if dead skin. "You don't need anymore skin flaps" I remarked. Laughing away I was. Nil response.
Like must things it's down to social media. It seems many people are just trying to out down people on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram.
Lol, out downing each other. You might have just come up with the next 'Ice Bucket Challenge' right there.
When I were a lad (I'm 35) it wasn't called trick or treating, it was halloweening. You'd knock on the door and say 'happy halloween' and get money not sweets. I only actually did it once but there was always plenty of little scamps doing it. And like eltigre, it was a turnip jack o lantern. Pumpkins were for posh bastards.
Well obviously... I meant to Quote Edmund on why it has become so big in recent years. Not every is as stupid as try and make them look.
Quick question, was it even anywhere near the extent of today when you were a kid? It doesnt matter where it originated, the popularity of it is undoubtedly influenced by American popular culture. FACT.
Its this Americanisation of our culture and traditions that's destroying our country. You should be ashamed. It's also the time of year I ask the missus if her mums popping round. Don't even need to mention the broomstick. Still get glared at.
F*****g halloween! I will guess that Mums spend around £10 - £20 on kitting their darling little cherubs up for the night. They then spend 2 - 3 hours taking them round the streets and p*****g everybody off (apart from the old dears who never get any visitors). They then receive sweets and loose change which will probably total £10 - £20. The solution is: Give their little cherubs the £10 to £20 spent on the outfits and in turn she gets 3 hours of her life back and we don't have to sit with A)the lights dimmed for 3 hours or B) shotgun in hand or C) ronnie the Rottweiler chomping at the bit. The only losers are Asda, Tesco and the like. Happy halloween
Almost in a nutshell. There should be a law passed that makes it legal to discombobulate anyone you catch throwing eggs.
I used to go Trick or Treating 30 years ago demanding sweets off random neighbours I'd never spoken to before. I only got attacked once amazingly. I've bought some large rockets ready for next week but if I hear any knocks on my door tonight they may be getting a premature launch from a first floor window.
