But back when he could have had it all, he turned down Chelsea's and Madrid's huge pay packets. It wasn't about the money then. It's just a classic case of "hump and dump" - everyone loved Stevie G when he was in his prime, and slated him when he dared make eyes at anyone else. Now that he's aged a bit and not quite the same player, everyone wants rid of him - or to shove him on to a salary less than the sack of **** Glen Johnson's. Despite the sacrifices he's made to stay true to his boyhood club.
I expect it from the wums, it's football banter, I don't expect it from our own. I'm not talking about those who say he was great but perhaps it's time to step back, I'm talking about those who slag him off all the time because he doesn't do what they demand of him.
Rubbish. He's given us his entire career to date and almost single handedly won us trophies at times. If his contract expires, he's a free agent and owes us nothing. He's earnt his right to be respected no matter what decision (within reason) he makes.

Not sure where the story is tbh. His contract runs out soon and he's not (yet) been offered a new one. Press ask him what his plans are and he says he'd like to continue playing football, whether that be here with a new contract or elsewhere. I hardly see that as a shock to anyone, especially our management, so I doubt they'll be feeling under any pressure to hastily thrust an improved deal under his nose. Non of the top teams will offer him close to what we are giving him, so no danger of losing him to a big team or even a rival. He's not fishing for a new deal, he wants to keep playing - wherever that ends up. Only teams who'd match his wages would be MLS sides or maybe the likes of Gala but at the expense of higher level competitive football. If, however, he can't accept a lower pay packet or at least only a one year rolling deal like Terry has, then you have to question his motives, but ultimately, we have no clue on that yet so it's pure speculation.
Rodgers said that a new deal for Gerrard was a 'formality' back in July, just after Gerrard annouced his International retirement. So the reason he's not yet signed is not due to your manager. Which leaves either the owners not wanting to offer a fella who'll be 35 before the season ends, a new deal at this point......or plain old cash, as the reasons why it rumbles on.
He's only said this because we haven't yet tabled a new deal. He clearly wants to end his career with us. If he does move it will be to a league with a slower, less physical playing style which would suit him, Spain, Italy, USA. Look at Italy... Totti and Pirlo still going close to 40. As long as he doesn't sign for one of our historical or current rivals I don't mind him going. His leaving could be a positive catalyst for more change at the club. If he does stay he should be given the 'Giggs' role (bleurgh), on the bench for necessary cameos when we're in the ****. He certainly shouldn't be starting every game next season and be the lynchpin that he still is.
Or assurances about playing time. Or information about a future role with the club after the contract ends.
He wouldn't be human if he didn't think of his future at the club, his earning potential, his playing career, and other off field post-playing ambitions. Any player from Suarez to Terry to Lampard would be looking at number one. He is trying to get the best possible deal while wanting to stay at the club. I would think he would like these in order of preference: 1. Good deal - and stay at Liverpool. 2. Good deal - but move to another club. 3. Not so good deal - stay at the club 4. Not so good deal - another club 5. Retire as an ambassador/coach at the club. Why blame him to do whatever he can to achieve objective No 1? On the other hand, it is never easy to let a great player, an icon go. Managers of all clubs have found it difficult to tell a player that they are no longer the main man and to even rest them for some of the matches.. And it is complex. The club fans hate it when the player goes to another rival so sometimes the club keeps the player longer than is necessary in order to prevent another club getting hold of a still effective player. And they will only sell him right at the end of his career. IMO, no need to sweeten the pill. He wants to squeeze the best deal out of the club but that's only what every player in his position would have done or do. He is neither saint nor sinner.
Dunno if it's hump and dump - I think most Liverpool fans would be happy he stayed if the club can afford it, and the £20k salary was an obvious piss take. Tbh I think Gerrard, Lampard and Rio have only themselves to blame. Scholes, Giggs, Neville and Carragher all negotiated good salaries in their mid 20s, around £80-90k a week each, and stuck with those for the rest of their careers, signing on the line every year with no fuss until they called it a day. The other three kept pushing for whatever they could - Gerrard essentially did a Rooney in 2005 by threatening to leave if he didn't get an extra £20k a week, but no one noticed it due to the lack of trophies prior to that and the CL win acting as a good smokescreen. So the three of them all ended up on £120-150k a week, when they are patently not worth that much any more, and thus either need to accept a pay cut (which they won't), or leave the club. Personally (and I know I am not itk on this) it sounds like LFC have offered Gerrard a lower salary, or possibly pay as you play, and his chat to the tabs is trying to drum up some support from the LFC fans to convince them to offer him more. I doubt LFC wouldn't offer him any contract at all, but whether it's one he thinks is acceptable any more is another question. I would turn this stuff round swarbs both utd and lfc only have themselves to blame and certain other teams like ac Milan too There is a case always for a bergkamp style player or even a scholes of some games and pirlo is a good example too BUT this is a young mans game and a game requiring speed. Some can counter pace with speed of thought Clubs who let players age on staff take big risks. Lampard a brief little flurry aside getting rid was great move by Chelsea. Frankly utd held Ferdinand, scholes, giggs and have given carrick too long a deal. Lfc should never have given carra 2 years for his last contract and Gerrard should be told shut up No player like toure or Gerrard is worth more than their performances on pitch
