Topper gig just been announced to play in Sunderland next year. The damned and the Angelic Upstarts. The Damned, probably the first punk band. PUNK rock legends The Damned have announced they will be playing a rare Wearside gig. Original members Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible will take to the stage with the iconic band at North Shore, St Peterâs, on April 24. Theyâll be performing a greatest hits show featuring New Rose, Smash It Up, Love Song and their 80âs number two hit single Eloise. It will be Captain Sensibleâs birthday on the night of the gig and thereâs a good chance he will be trying to get his own â80s number one hit, Happy Talk, added to the set. Chris Monk, the bandâs manager, said: âWe are delighted to accept the offer to play Sunderland, the band always enjoy playing the North East.â Also on the bill for the night will be the North Eastâs notorious punk bank Angelic Upstarts. The bandâs founder member and front man Thomas Mensforth (Mensi) is looking forward to the show. I've had so many back stage pass offers in the past for the Dammed, never accepted them as I don't know much of them, even though I don't mind punk.

Quite like punk but couldn't go to a gig anymore, full of people trying a bit too hard to be cool/hard. Incidentally Comm, I think you've just single handedly stolen Punks history/it's origins from the Yanks and given it to us.
Like which bands? The Damned were the first proper British punk band i think, and honestly can't think of any American ones.
I think I'm correct in saying that the Damned released the first ever punk single and first ever punk album but I assume that there were other punk bands floating about before they formed!
Don go out on the piss much these days so rarely see the bloke anymore, if I do bump into him, I sometimes do, I'll get his number and I'll try to nail some tickets, May not get backstage, not drank with him for so long so doubt he'd give me back stage. But if a can wangle some I'll give them away first come first serve on here. I know another bloke who used to get me back stage, a gig photographer, but after my behavior backstage at a Maximo Park gig as put a stop to that.
Blondie were very punk in the mid 70's, The Ramones were proper punk and going in 74 and some consider the New York Dolls who started in 71 or 72. The New York punk scene started in the 70s a spat out **** loads of punk/post punk/new wave bands like the talking heads, Punk is very much a yank export that we mastered.

Punk's a bit angsty for me so tend to go for post punk and New Wave. Huge Blondie/Talking Heads/Lou Reed & TVG fan. Which is quite funny. It's very much a battle between scenes, the British scene ran by McClaren, Westwood and with influential gigs in places like the Lesser Free Trade Hall, Manchester against the CBGB driven New York scene. For almost everything in life I prefer British and dislike American stuff often just on principal, not punk/New Wave. Just completely outgrew punk when I left my teens and my hormones settled the f** down. Edit: Can't believe I forgot Iggy and the Stooges...
Cack enough that the Clash ripped them off often and considered the a huge influence. it's either that or I Wanna be Sedated. No Ramones, no UK Punk scene.
