    I understand what you are saying about not hyping it up too much but Carroll was a Toon supporter and understood what the #9 was about and had stated that it was his ambition to wear it one day.

    By giving it to him so early it meant that his ambition had already been achieved when Liverpool came calling with their offer. If he hadn't worn it yet it may well have been a factor in him staying with us for a bit longer. Just my opinion but I stick by it.

    I'll agree to disagree but I just can't buy that Carroll understood what the number 9 was about, but decided that having it three months constituted achieving that ambition. I could be imagining it but didn't he once state that he'd like to chase Shearers record? Thats not easy to do in one season before Christmas...

    I agree with you actually. Personally having got my hands on the #9 shirt I would like to think that you would have had to rip the thing from my dead hands to get it away from me again and I wouldn't have jumped ship after three months. But Carroll had the real temptation of a massive payrise and obviously his own views on whether he had reached his objectives with the club.

    We can never know whether I am right or not but I still think that not having worn it at all would still have been a factor in keeping him here a bit longer. But I accept that it may not have been able to compete with £90k/week.

    As for breaking Shearer's record I recall that too. Obviously he really didn't mean it, just yet another player telling the fans what he thinks we want to hear.

    Hughton did the right thing with the number 9 shirt in our championship season. Carroll did earn it but threw it back in our faces. We should get our forward sorted and wait to see who earns it next.

    We should treat the number 9 shirt like this all the time to keep it's exclusivity to the greats!

    I'm gonna throw my vote in for Perch...i feel if we put him upfront he would flourish! His natural skill on the ball, and fairly decent height would make him a first class centre forward! :bandit:

    Either give it to Tiote for one season as the strikers battle it out in an attempt to earn it or give it to Fowulashola for his loyalty just for a season, noone else deserves it more than him at the moment.

    And you never know, with a bit of luck he could just turn into an absolute beast...

    nobody at the club desereves it simples, any new players come through i think they should not be handed the shirt till they have proven there worth
