Pinched this from BBC Sport... Who is the best player you've ever seen live?

    And to save another thread...

Should men and women be given parity of pay across sports?

Best players I've seen play for Newcastle: Shearer, Robert, Ba, Cabaye, Tiote.

Best performances I've seen against us: Coutinho (Liverpool), Mignolet (Sunderland), Silva (Man City).

Best live goal (probably missed a lot I'll remember later):
    1. Tiote vs Arsenal
    2. James Milner vs Birmingham 3rd replay
    3. Jonas vs Barnsley
    4. Cabaye vs Man Utd
    5. Fabrice Pancrate vs Watford

Overall, the best player I've seen live goes to... ughhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... **** it I'm saying Demba. No Shearer. No Tiote. No Demba. Sticking with Demba.

    Lionel Messi

Difficult one though. Having seen all the PL stars through the years, particularly those from the top four like Henry, Keane, Cantona, Zola at their peak. Also Rivaldo turned out for Barca in "that" game. However Messi was mesmeric. It may have been influenced by having a great city break in Barcelona too mind, great place.

Should women get equal pay? I'm going to have to say no. Its all about the money sport generates which allows the big bucks to be paid. Mens sport attracts more fans, which sells more merchandise, attracts bigger investors and so on. I realise some will say that is because sport has been dominated by men and they've had an unfair advantage because of the past discrimination etc. However I still think more men are interested in sport than women, men are capable physically of more extremes than women, and therefore mens sport will always be the bigger draw. I do think more needs to be done in terms of investing in womens sport and developing it, but levelling the pay, who is going to pay for the additional funds required? Sponsors won't.

Best players for Newcastle: Shearer, Beardsley, Ginola, Cole, Ferdinand, Woodgate, Speed, Lee - I'd probably go with Beardsley, Shearer or Ginola - and Beardo would edge it work rate and his ability to make people look utterly foolish. All two footed aswell which I like.

Best goal live - so difficult. Tiotes, HBA's, Shearer (too many), Beardo (too many), Robert - Spurs, Albert - Man U. Couldn't select, like you say too many forgotten!

Best Performance against us is a good one - one I will have to have a long think about.

For NUFC it would be Tony Green. It was unbelievable as to exactly how good he was. Closest comparison would be Peter Beardsley.

Anyone, it would be George Best. Absolutely amazing talent.

Best goal, too hard to pick but Beardsley springs to mind for quite a few or Shearer against Everton or Ginola in Europe (the one at the Gallowgate End where he flicks it over someones head and volleys) or Bob the Frog had a few good ones. No, have decided ................too hard to pick one!!?!!

Equal pay for women, no. For the reasons DMW puts.

Agree, but I didn't want to be the sexist twat who said it first :emoticon-0103-cool:

If there was going to be proper equality, it would involve women competing with men, and they can't. I still believe in future a woman could play football with men, because there's no reason in the world a woman couldn't be technically excellent, but it's whether she would be able to cope physically.

It's a bit odd having women, drawing less crowds, jumping smaller hurdles, running slower times, basically doing things men do, but being worse at it, getting paid the same. In most work places, there's no excuse for gender-based discrimination. Whoever's the best, regardless of gender, should get paid the most. The same should apply to sport. It's not really based on gender discrimination, just men happen to be better.

    Best player.... Shearer....
like a postman.. he always delivered over a long period of time.

reference men and women's pay... well it's an interesting question as it depends on the sport.. the standard etc...

In principle men and women should be on the same base pay... but with things like football it all depends on the individual and his or her skills.

you wouldn't see, say the top NUFC womens player on £80,000 a week like Colo as the money isn't there to pay the wages for a start.

If a woman popped up who was as good as Messi then she should get the wages Messi does if she is allowed to compete in the same team and play for the Barca first team.

Maybe in the future when new genetically modified women appear this can be considered. Anyway once we are invaded and have all morphed into one asexual race it won't matter. Mr Tiote told me.

Think about this. You order a stripper for a bachelor party... I turn up and demand the same rate of pay you'd give to Charlene who dropped out because she couldn't find a sitter for her kids...

My 2 favourites for Newcastle were Peter Beardsley and Jimmy " Jinky" Smith. Tony Green was a great little player who's career ended far too early.

This is a hard one cos I always miss people out and then remember them later.

Best player seen live would probably be Johann Cruyff, though special mentions to Kenny Dalglish, Gheorghe Hagi, Ruud Gullit, Malcolm McDonald, Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle, David Ginola, Paul Gascoigne, Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona, Trevor Brooking, Liam Brady......

Best performance I've seen against us - Ian Rush for Chester City. We were (old) 2nd division and they were struggling in the (old) 4th division. We were at home against them in the 3rd round of the FA Cup and thought I was going to watch a formality. We were torn apart by a totally unknown lanky teenager and got beat 2-0. He was brilliant that day and even though we were getting beat he was being clapped by our fans.

Best goal I've seen us score - It may have been airbrushed in my memories slightly, but Tommy Cassidy scoring for us against the mackems. In my head it was a sweet half-volley from about 40 yards out (which probably means he smacked it from just outside the box) but either way it nearly broke the back of the net and it was special because of it being scored by hop-along against Sunderland.
