    Liverpool

    v.

    Swansea City

    Capital One Cup 4th Round

    Tuesday 28th October 2014 - 20:00

    Anfield

A very interesting game, this one, for obvious reasons. We wouldn’t normally expect to get much out of a trip to Anfield, although you could argue that without Suarez and with Balotelli misfiring on all cylinders, it wouldn’t be such a daunting prospect even if both teams fielded full-strength teams.

Top-half(ish) teams like Southampton, West Ham, ourselves, Hull (no more Europa League) & Stoke with no European distractions should be be targeting this competition. West Ham and Hull are already gone and Southampton will be playing Stoke. Man Utd, Arsenal and Everton have already been knocked out.

This game will be all about the strength of the line-ups: let’s have a look at Swansea first.

    Tremmel is a 100% guarantee.

Richards, Tiendalli and Amat are all injured. Unless Bartley gets a start we could well go with our standard back 4 of Rangel, Williams, Fernandez and Taylor. There’s some logic to fielding a full-strength defence; prevent Liverpool from scoring and you’re guaranteed at least a penalty shoot-out.

I imagine Shelvey will start given his association with Liverpool and due to the fact he was suspended against Stoke, so he should be ‘fresh’. Carroll may get the nod ahead of Ki.

Sigurdsson has a (groin?) strain so it seems a good opportunity to start Emnes behind the striker who I imagine will be Gomis. As usual, it’s any two from Dyer, Routledge and Montero. Perhaps it’s Routledge’s turn to sit a game out, giving us:

    ..................Tremmel
    Rangel....Fernandez......Williams...Taylor
    ...........Carroll......Shelvey......
    Dyer............Emnes............Montero
    ............Gomis...............

As for Liverpool: they’re not going to take this game too seriously, are they? They’re in the middle of a hugely tough block of fixtures between international breaks:

Sun 19 Oct QPR 2 Liverpool 3 (fortunate win)
Wed 22 Oct Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 3
    Sat 25 Oct Liverpool 0 Hull 0
Tue 28 Oct Liverpool v. Swansea League Cup 4th Round
Sat 1st Nov Newcastle v. Liverpool
Tue 4th Nov Real Madrid v. Liverpool
Sat 8th Nov Liverpool v. Chelsea

They scraped through in the last round against Middlesbrough in that epic penalty shoot-out 14-13, after drawing 2-2. The team they fielded that night was:

    22 Mignolet
    19 Manquillo
    04 K Touré
    17 Sakho
    03 Jose Enrique
    46 Rossiter (Williams - 79' )
    21 Lucas
    50 Markovic (Fernández Saez - 98' )
    31 Sterling
    20 Lallana
    09 Lambert (Balotelli - 74' )

I don’t see Sterling starting after all his recent ‘exertions’, so that is a very beatable team.

MK Dons/Sheff Utd and Fulham/Derby are assured places in the quarter-finals. The draw is wide open. We need to sieze the opportunity of a place in the quarters and I think I will be disappointed if we don’t get there.

    Liverpool 0 Swansea1.

    Great thread AD <applause>

Difficult to predict how Monk will approach this. A winnable game as you say, but Liverpool are never pushovers. I actually hope Gomis gets a runout. I was at the game yesterday and talking to my mate about this. Gomis is obviously a slow starter but what if Bony had been playing the odd ten minutes here and there when he came to us? He would never have shown us what he could do.

For understandable reasons Monk has kept faith with Bony but these games are the ones where Gomis should be given a chance to shine. If he's getting nowhere with 30, 35 minutes to go then at least he's had a chance.

Really hope Montero has a break from yesterday as he ran his heart out. Looking forward to seeing Emnes in the Siggy role - hope that happens too. Hard to predict a result this one so I'm copping out. <ok>

    EDIT: OK 1-2 Swans :)

If we go for it Tuesday, I think we will win. 2-0 to the mighty Swans.

    Great thread and analysis.

Injuries are preventing a proper rotation. Shepherd may get a start somewhere at the back. Carroll to start. Dyer will probably start. Bartley? Gomis should probably start over Bony as has been said. Sig looks he need a rest, perhaps Sig sits and Shelvey pushes forward. Shelvey's emotion at Anfield is a trump card.

I have no worries about going to Anfield and leaving with a result. It's easily within our capability especially the way 'Pool have been playing. The Madrid match exposed a gulf between 'Pool and the elite technically, mentally and athletically. 'Pool had to play a stamina sapping match just to stay close - how are they recovering.

Very difficult game but a close game and with liverpool being at home then i think they will edge it 2-1. We may see leon for this game and two or three others like tremmel,Richards and gomis replacing some of the regulars....

  9. Sterling was rested against West Ham in the league so that he could play against Boro in the last round so I wouldn't bank on him not playing despite it making sense for him not to <laugh>

I suspect to see a similar Liverpool team to the last cup game (see OP) but don't expect too much from tomorrow nights game TBH. I'd say going out would be a bit of a blessing but we won't be winning the league, CL (stop laughing! <grr>), or FA Cup so this is our only chance at a trophy this season in reality and I think Brod knows that too.

Just hope its a decent game <ok>

As long as we dont get thrashed 5 or 6-0 like before and we field a side fitting to our aspirations of doing well in cup games....we shall see soon what to expect..Liverpool will be favorites thats for sure whatever team we put out...

  11. I shouldn't worry, there is no chance we'll keep a clean sheet, never mind scoring more than two <laugh>

I don't recall us getting thrashed by 'Pool in cup games at Anfield in recent history.

Of course there was that 5-0 loss in the league before our cup final .... which is what Dai is referring to .... with our beloved leader playing CB.

Rodgers Makes 9 Changes: Predicted Liverpool Starting XI To Face Swansea

    http://football-talk.co.uk/96441/rodgers-makes-9-changes-predicted-liverpool-starting-xi-to-face-swansea/

    Possible team
    ***********Mignolet***********

    *Johnson**Skrtel**Toure**Enrique*

    *******Henerson**Lucas********

    ***Borini**Coutinho**Markovic****

    ***********Lambert***********

May be a 'second' team but it still looks pretty good to me.

My Possible Swans Team (I'm struggling)
    ****************Tremmel****************

    *Jazz/Shepperd**Bartley**Fernandez**Tiendalli*

    *************Carrol**Shelvey************

    ********Emnes**Sheehan**Dyer*********** In what order?

    ****************Gomis*****************

Bench to include Cornell, Ki, doubt Williams will have a part to play, and Jebus knows who else. Is Leon fit yet? Is Tate back from loan ?

I think we have our work cut out.

    Tremmel
    Rangel, Fernandez, ,Wiilliams ,Taylor
Dyer , Shelvey, Ki , Carroll, Montero
Gomis or Emnes but id go with Emnes.Monk wants to use Carroll more and this is the perfect time . Carroll is going to get his minutes bumped up from here on in imo

Against sides that want to play and Liverpool has got to in that list then yes Carroll probably will start , the rotation with the wingers will be Dyer starting in front of Montero due to the shift he put in on Saturday .Bartley may get a start with Williams and we could see Shepard making his debut although 2 changes in the back may be 1 too many . Looking forward to it travelling up to make a week of it watching the Academy play theirs on Thursday

Slight strain but nothing to worry about, Pembs.

Daiswan - I think my kid's pet rabbit is a bigger Swans fan. She watches every game on TV and loves it. She'd go to games if she could and of course lives locally but unlike you can't get to the ground and hasn't got any opposable thumbs to buy tickets. She doesn't rip the **** out of our players when they go on a barren run in front of goal either so she's very supportive of the team - a lesson you should learn.

    Number one fan my ass.
