Well I thought he was funny then I watched one of his later dvd's and it was terrible....didnt even raise a chuckle! Although when you've been about as long as he has, he's gonna struggle with decent material eventually!
I'm guilty too. A league of their own is alright. Early days of it, and it hadknt found its feet. Much better now.

I find myself more inclined to laugh at people if they're just chatting away, rather than trying to make me laugh. Stand up really isn't something I find funny, I sat through an hour of Jason Manford at the Apollo a couple of years ago and he really just killed any enthusiasm I may have had for stand up comedy. There are a few exceptions, I find the sitcom stuff that Ricky Gervais does very clever and to this day I still laugh out loud at The Office and Extras. Sean Lock consistently amuses me one way or another, his disregard for what's going on around him as he tucks into one of his rants gets me every time. Stand up wise, I'd say Lee Evans is my favourite, his energy is unbelievable but I think I laugh just because he's infectious, you want to laugh at him. Rik Mayall's humour was right up my street, he's my favourite celebrity and comedian, this makes me laugh every time I read it... please log in to view this image
Totally gutted when he died! First and only celebrity death that truly shocked and upset me! I wouldn't go as far to say it was like losing a close friend cos I never met the bloke but it hit me harder than I would have expected it to!
It hit home when I watched a few episodes of bottom not long back, I started to notice things in his character that I'd never seen before. Such as the way his mind was never 'idling' he was always in the character, even if he's not the focal point of the scene. In one scene the fella who plays Dave Hedgehog was just sat there, gormless as it wasn't his turn to talk, Rik was never like that. In the 'Milkman' episode in Filthy Rich and Catflap (that he later developed into the Gasman episode of Bottom) you can see the cogs going, thinking what he could do to make anarchy out of every second the camera was rolling, he never stopped learning and developing his characters. That was why he was adamant that Bottom could have done more and why Ade said it had run it's course. Ade didn't have that character development in his locker, he'd taken Eddie and Vyvian as far as he could.
There used to be a comedy duo doing the rounds of the local clubs called the Barton Brothers..They were the best piss takers I have come across..They must have cost the clubs a fortune because most were scared to get up to even go to the bar for fear of getting it off them..
Being an '80s kid i still watch repeats of Not the 9 Oclock News, Smith and Jones and Victoria Wood. Went to see her a few years back and she was brilliant. Each to their own i suppose.
