Think there was a school shooting the other day too. It makes me sick how quite a few Americans think Sandy Hook was a conspiracy theory. They say gun control leads to genocide, like in Nazi Germany, but it didn't happen in the UK/Australia, probably because we didn't have crazy people in charge! Guns won't be able to defend against a government with drones, bombs and a huge military budget anyway.
Prosecutors in South Africa are appealing sentence and verdict on Pistorius. I think what is wrong is that he won't serve more of his 5 years...less than a year served in prison is totally wrong for a reckless shooting which resulted in a death.
Won't get them anywhere. I think it's a fair verdict and sentence. Whether he serves 1 year or 5 is irrelevant when it comes to appeals.
They are apparently appealing the verdict first, then will go after the sentence if that fails. The prosecutors can appeal sentencing in this country as well.
personally I don't consider 5 years in prison a fair sentence for the reckless killing of his girlfriend, even less that he might serve 4 years of that under house arrest. He was trained to handle firearms. One of the first things he was taught was that a firearm should only be used where there is a clear threat to his life. not sure he could declare that.
Unproveable that he intended to kill Reeva, but less than a year in prison was far too lenient for firing several rounds into a confined space where he knew someone was. Her mother has just said that he was going to kill someone one day...I agree with that when you hear of his strange behaviour. The judge ruled most of that out of consideration (which was probably correct in law).

My point is, putting some abitary deadline is completely stupid. The West should pull out when the job is done and the Afghan army are capable of shouldering the entire burden in the long-term. Not one day before.

Don't you think they may have pulled out because it wasn't winning them significant friends and influencing people, and they were no longer prepared to spend the money on it..? Loads of people in this country ask why the hell we're out there..? They only look as far as their nose. It's not a vote winner and the Afghan Army can shoulder the responsibility now. When it all breaks out again, no doubt we'll be back. And it wasn't some arbitrary date, pulled out of a hat. It was planned. As far as we British plan anything.
