I know that it would not be the smartest buy by any means but would anyone else wana see Shay return to the toon? I would love to see him back at the toon. Manchester City also only looking for around 4 Million. Would be great to have one of the legendary toon players back.

Don't want him back, don't need him back. Ignoring that he left us in the relegation season in search for trophies, we've already got three keepers fighting for the shirt, two of which are still in their early twenties.

Don't blame Shay for leaving at all, and unlike most I hold nothing against him. Quite the opposite actually. I hold him in high regard.

Having said that we don't need him back. No point spending £4m on an area we have 3 players to play in. Would much rather that £4m was put towards a striker.

Come back when you've retired Shay and get on the coaching staff

Mercenary, he was out as soon as the chips looked down, even like the likes of Martins and Owen stopped to the end. Got what he deserved in my opinion, a wasted career. I wonder if he had his chance again, would he of stayed at Newcastle, instead of sitting on the bench at City? He was an exceptional keeper and i think we would have stopped up if he hadn't engineered his move.

Quality keeper, and IMO doesn't deserve to be left to rot at City. The 1-5 game against Liverpool was the turning point, without him we would have lost 10-1 and he looked fed up by the end of the match.

That's unfair. Given always gave 100% and saved us so many times. He got finally fed up of being far and away the best player at a club in turmoil that was going nowhere. To say he is worse than Martins or Owen is ridiculous!

I'm sure he slagged off the way the club was run and who it was run by so I can't see either party wanting it to happen.

I personally don't want him back, I'd rather have Krul and Forster fighting to become the next Shay Given at Newcastle

As much as a love Shay, I wouldn't want him back. I feel that if we signed him, it pushes both Krul and Forster back down and one of them would love, which I don't want. Plus it would be a bit of a kick in the teeth to Harper.

Why does this get suggested so much? Aside from the fact we dont need him, it would seriously hurt the morale of our current keepers and we'd probably lose Krul and/or Forster because of it.

It's not a case of not wanting him, it's a case of not needing him.

He was great for us when he was here and I alwyas felt sorry for him, being such a great keeper but without a defence in front of him. He'd have kept a clean sheet almost every week if he'd any kind of help from a defence.

The thing now is that we're better off for keepers than any other team in the Country. Harps may be near the end of his carreer but Krul and Forster will be with us for a long time yet and Soderberg looks quite promising too.

Taking those three into consideration I think we could do more with the £4m than buy another keeper.

I like the lad, I hope he goes to a decent club and is first choice keeper and gets appreciated. I just hope the club he doesnt go to is here.

Whoever called him as bad as Martins & Owen... <doh>! He continually stayed with us whenever a big club was linked, it was only when our club became a complete shambles he decided we were no longer what was best for his career. Hold nothing against him.

We don't need him but I do feel sorry for him. He should go to Arsenal I think.

He didn't really help himself out with the defence. He's always been terrible at organising and communicating with them.

Bringing him back now would be completely pointless anyway. The current Shay Given isn't any better than the options the club already has. He hasn't really been the super-keeper that we think of since Harewood tried to murder him in '06.

His mistake wasn't so much leaving us but joining Man City. At the time I don't think people knew just how good Hart was but it was clear that Arsenal were crying out for a quality keeper (still are) and it would have been a much wiser move from a playing point of view. Financially however...

He wasn't exactly a mercenary, considering he stayed at the club for years and only won like the Intertoto
I was dissapointed he didn't stay out till the end of the relegation season just to show his support for the club but I don't blame him for leaving

Anyway back to the question, no. Goalkeepers are the last position we need to buy in as we potentially have 3 who can play at PL level, it would be a waste of wages and transfer money and he looks to be on his way to Celtic so good luck to him.

Definitely didn't leave for the money, signed an improved contract when Fat Fred was handing money out like he was growing it out of his arse. He left to win trophies which clearly wasn't happening anytime soon at Newcastle when he left
