We've still got ours, not for the want of trying. The old Den was a horrible place to visit. Other than that it's a shame to see all that history gone to waste, just to make way for shoebox housing or a bloody supermarket.
Between Uni terms I sometimes worked for Comet and afterwards I ended up as a manager at stores. I did some of my management training at the Retail Park that replaced the Goldstone Ground. It was officially Comet's Hove branch, and Brighton are often forgotten to represent Hove as well. I remember that I got the General Manager at that store dismissed because the staff used to come to me telling me stories of how the bloke used to fiddle with the female staff and make the blokes tremble with fear that they'd lose their jobs. So I got a bit of a dossier together and got him out. Plus we rigged up one of the VCRs into the security system to record him fiddling with himself in his manager's office. He was an ex-army cook and a little Hitler. And if you're reading this mate, no hard feelings but I thoroughly enjoyed getting you out. I know a lot of people down that way to this day who are glad you left.
