Should have retired last season as a UTD player imo, rather than grabbing a few extra quid from QPR.

Very good in his prime. One of the best in the world? Debatable.

I can see why footballers are hesitant to retire if I am honest.
If you are getting 70k a week (was probably on more than that at United, but at QPR cant imagine he was on more than that) I wouldnt want it to end either.
One year of 70k a week is £3.6m!!

If it were me i'd pull a Giggs and play for as long as I could.

Yeah I agree to a certain extent. But he can hardly be skint and could have still made a shed load of money doing something else football related. I just think it's a shame to move to a ****e club just to earn a few extra quid when he could have bowed out from a club he was loved at. For me it takes some of the shine off his career.....just my opinion <ok>

Thats the noble way of looking at it,
the flip side of it is though, I would think "**** my career, ive won everything at United, now I am just gonna earn as much as I can to save up for my retirement!"
Hence why players such as David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Thierry Henry, Jermain Defoe and Frank Lampard, move to complete ****ty leagues like in the USA, for a pay off, the definition of sacrificing your integrity for a pay out. Anelka and Drogba did the same thing in Japan

True. I guess I'm just an old romantic. Well not even that old.... a 35 year old romantic.

It just shows how greedy the rich are. I'd have to work around 20 years to earn what they do a week!

He should have retired two years ago. Best centre half in the world at his peak, an absolutely sublime player.

Should retire now and save himself the embarrassment that he's facing.

Absolutely. For a couple of seasons he was majestic. A proper ball playing centre half. I wouldn't expect any Dippers to see it or agree. Most of them rate Carragher as more than just a grafting blocker.

He wasn't even the best CB at Utd during this period, let alone in the world.

He was a supreme athlete, but the guy has the intelligence of a burnt orange, so I wouldn't call him the best in the world, as the best in the world would look like the best in any league. More studious leagues like Italy or Spain, he would have been out of his depth, even during his peak, against the top sides.

Best in the premier league for a season or two, no doubt, as he was bred for our game. Fast paced, hard, tall... Technically? Average, like most of England's best players.

He's made a good career for himself, but his athleticism isn't what it was and he's being found out quite rapidly now. Compare this with Terry, who's never been gifted with pace, who reads a game much better and is a much more all accomplished defender.

Wouldn't say best in the world individually, but definitely part of the best CB pairing in the world from 2007 till 2009. Always thought Rio was one of those players who was quality on the ball and able to tackle really well, but needed a leader alongside him to keep his concentration going. When he and Vidic were playing well together we were absolutely outstanding at the back.

Just a shame his back went, then two seasons later Vidic's knee was shot.

    Ah, nostalgia...

There is no debate. Youve used the words 'one of' unnecessarily as well.

Any chance you had of presenting a coherent argument was completely destroyed by the bit in bold.

People rate vidic but forget that vidic worked because of rio. Vidic was our terry (vastly superior to terry in every single way) and needed an intelligent, ball playing centreback alongside him to excell.

When vidic played but rio didnt, vidic was often poor. When rio played alongside anyone, he excelled.

Only Nesta compared to him. Rio was better and played against superior sides throughout his career though.

People go on about Kompany and silva as the best defenders now. These guys wouldnt make the top ten of rios days.
