My favourite weather forecast from my Tobago days, "throw another sheet on the bed tonight it's going to plummet to 21C!"
Nah... kind of obligated to go this time. It will be fun nonetheless... maybe I'll pitch my small tent inside the big one for extra insulation! I can survive the arctic cold of the night- and then during the day it'll be warm!
Build a fire if it gets too cold (as you always should if out in the wild its the best bit with some tunes on and beers! Obv you cant if on a site) Have a good time
It's a campsite but listed as "primitive" - meaning no electricity, or water hookups next to tent... no showers or toilet facilities! It's just a general area of woods near a national park entrance that has been approved for camping. No designate "sites" - just pick a spot and pitch your tents. We can have fires (and shall). It's a very rocky area- lots of large rocks- and there are a lot of rock fire rings made from previous campers already built that we reuse at this place. Not too far from the carpark- so I'm bringing my inflatable mattress to sleep on! I'm being silly. 10C isn't that cold... but its colder than what I've been used to. I was wading in the ocean and swimming in an outdoor pool two weekends ago! ... granted I pretty much had the pool to myself... the natives won't get in the water if it is cooler than bathwater temperatures. The few people who got in the water with me were probably Canadians or fellow Europeans. In December and January it will dip down below freezing overnight occasionally. We also get the occasional ice storm/snow too. It can get very cold at night here in mid-winter. The difference is- our winters are a lot drier and the day time temperatures are higher even when it gets cold at night... and by the end of February we've had at least one weekend of 30C something weather (but not consistent- Feb/March one day can be 30C shorts weather and then two days later get a snow storm) - winter is typically short here though. It is very rare to see ice anywhere after noon even in middle of winter- but lows overnight do drop down a lot- they just quickly rebound when the sun comes up.
I went to a 'wild' campsite once where they had fire pits at each pitch so you could have a fire. They came round just before dark in the tractor pulling a trailer full of logs and firelighters etc. Only problem is it makes all your stuff reek of smoke, and the eco loos they had. Took a powerful torch with us so lack of light was no problem. Would go back but it's in Wales.
That sounds like a cool place Milk, but you're a temperature pussy. 10 degree low!! I always wonder if I moved to a hotter climate would I start to think that the same temperature range was cold and start to feel it more. I doubt it. If I moved to Florida I'd still be rocking shorts, vest and flip flops in 'winter' whilst all the locals pretended in their jackets and scarves.
Yeah... I normally stink of campfire when I come home from camping... usually take an extra long shower afterwards. Everything I'm wearing will stink of campfire too! When Nov 5th lands on a weekend the wife, kids and I have been camping and had the fire, etc. We usually get multi-shaped and coloured marshmallows and build "Guys" out of Marshmallows - with the body parts joined together with toothpicks!
I do walk around in winter wearing shorts, etc and short sleave shirts... there again I walk around in long sleave shirts and jeans fairly often when its 35C outside. It's more I'm lazy and pick the first thing I find rather than plan for weather!
I've only ever used a proper site a handful of times in a tent. We mostly have found a nice spot and gone there, never leave any mess of course. We have camped in some great spots, in caves high up, beautiful woodlands, under my mates tree house (yes really, he lived in trees for ages to stop them from mining and these houses they built up there were amazing including bridges in between trees), great places where witches are meant to be buried and you see all sorts of colouful interesting characters in places like that, especially at summer solstice. Places that are meant to be haunted etc etc, we have some great spots in this country. I prefer the random spots you find rather than the sites. Collecting the wood is also the best bit! No needs for tractors bringing it you
I thought you were being silly Milk with the 10C, but didnt want to call you a soft American My Mrs before meeting me did some mountain trekking in Morocco and China and she said it got very cold up there!
