There have been cries of outrage at news of his release from all sorts of people ranging from the neo-fascist Home Secretary Teresa May, various freemasons.... er... sorry, senior police officers, and London taxi drivers. Roberts, now aged 78 is still considered by some to be an extremely dangerous man and there can be no doubt that the training he has received, dishing out books in the library of HMP Littlehey will enable him to resume his life of violent crime the moment he is let out of the gate. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that he will have saved most of the 50 pence a day wages he has earned whilst on the inside to finance his new criminal empire and may even buy himself a Bedford van as a getaway vehicle, and a shooter. Analysts suggest that, in modern day London, the van may be more difficult to obtain than the firearm. OK.... I was being flippant above. But all flippancy aside, there are two ways to look at this: Roberts is to be released. End of. There is no doubt that what he did was an abhorrent crime but he's done his time and should now be released as, at his age he is clearly no longer a danger to the public and will be so institutionalised and unfamiliar with life within the general public that a resumption of criminal activity is extremely unlikely. Alternatively Life should mean life. We must protect the police who put themselves in danger every day to protect the public and deserve nothing less than knowing that if they are killed in the line of duty, the perpetrators will go to jail for the rest of their natural days.
