Triple-cop killer Harry Roberts - we all know the name - is to be freed following 48 years in prison.

Should he be freed or made to spend the rest of his days in prison?

    Over to you.

There can't be many murderers who've had their own song sung around football grounds tbh.

48 years is 'life' so I suppose, in modern terms, he's done his time ........ he can't be much danger to society.

He needs a good publicist tbh, other criminals like Biggs, the Ripper the Krays etc have become 'celebrities' whereas Roberts is 'untouchable'.

I think had the murders taken place a couple of years earlier, he would have swung.

Pretty much my thoughts Smug, he's in his late 70s now and will probably be offered a quiet life somewhere....that is until The Sun catch up with him and plaster him all over their pages.

He was a career criminal and nonchalant killer who'd escaped the death sentence on a previous occasion.

I've no sympathy for him but I find it hypocritical that people, who deride him, 'glorify' other London criminals.

Did you realise the Krays liked their dear old mum and never murdered pensioners or stamped on kittens?

For me that is the be all and end all...If they still present a danger then they shouldn't be allowed out...If not, then 48 years is a hell of a lot longer than the average time served for murder, so why not..
For those saying he should have been put to death, I totally and utterly disagree...State execution is not the answer and mistakes, which are undoubtedly made, can not be rectified..

He should never be let out imo. He was an extremely violent criminal and most probably still is.
I've read he was running a drugs business while in prison so he obviously still has something about him.
    Let him rot in prison.

    OK, here we go <doh>

I'm not defending Roberts in any way and couldn't care less if he'd died in prison or been hung.

But, there was something about this case that never rang true to me.

Just consider the facts, as they were presented, for a second.

Roberts and 2 other men were sitting around in a van, 'preparing to commit an armed robbery'.
3 plain clothes policemen just happened to be driving by, decided there mischief afoot and opted to challenge them.
Instead of simply driving off, knowing the officers would be unarmed, the men shot all 3 policemen and abandoned their robbery.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories but I'm convinced there's more to this story that we'll ever know.

Aren't all records such as this made public after 50 years has passed?

    - I've no idea if that applies in this case.

It wouldn't matter if that's the case or not ...... what's recorded is what people want to be recorded.

I just don't believe the story that this was a chance meeting.

The mid-sixties was a period when the 'special units' of the Met Police were notoriously too close to gangsters etc.

The idea of unarmed policemen challenging known armed robbers, in that way, doesn't ring true.

All the gang had to do was drive off.

I agree about state murder mate but disagree on releasing him. Life should mean life and I don't differentiate between ANY murderer. He took a life and until that dead person comes back to life he or she should remain imprisoned. If I was the son or grandson of Harry Roberts I would be devastated to hear this news.

Can't agree there Cest, I'd attempt to murder anyone who attacked me, or my family, especially in my own home.

"A man who stabbed a burglar to death has been released without charge after a prosecutor ruled he acted in self-defence amid "frightening circumstances". Peter Flanagan, 59, was arrested on suspicion of murder after he confronted John Bennell, 27, who broke into his home in Salford, Greater Manchester, along with a group of other masked men - one of whom was wielding a machete."

Do you really believe this fella deserved to die in prison?
