This thread might sink like a sack of ****, but I thought I'd give it a go. I'm quite an avid reader when I have the time - I tend to read a book within a few days if I get into it. So what is everyone's favourite book? Or what are people reading right now? Any recommendations or reviews would be nice. I've just read 'Catch 22' by Joesph Heller It's the story of Captain Joseph Yossarian, a member of a US bomber crew stationed on the Mediterranean island of Pianosa. Yossarian is convinced that the military is trying to get him killed, and that those around him are insane, and he spends the book trying to get out of flying any more seemingly suicidal missions. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to - The basis of the 'Catch 22' Basically they are all crazy for flying the missions but the moment they admitted to being crazy they were deemed to be sane as they were rationally thinking - so the catch is although they can stop flying missions on the basis of being crazy, the moment they admit they are crazy they are seen to be sane, therefore have to carry on. I found the book very funny, and so well written it flowed extremely well. I'm envious to those that are yet to read it please log in to view this image THIS BOOK IS DEFINATELY IN MY TOP 3 BOOKS OF ALL TIME. AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ IN MY OPINION.
I really enjoyed Catch 22 when I read it, albeit that was a while ago now, so I second your recommendation. The film's not bad either, although for the sake of brevity it condenses and misses out a lot.
You should do mate. You can pick up a copy for next to nothing - absolute quality book. Nozzer - Didn't even know there was a film. However, most films based on a book do fall short, so I'd probably give it a miss
I just added it and about 4 others... amazon... expensive! now i need to find something someone lese asked about and i forgot to add 3 more then i'll be broke.
I wish. No i've not gone over there in a while. i refused to go next month so I'm black listed i think. If i was going i need to give order 2 weeks before as amazon use us post to deliver over there and its slow as F. its the other books that will cost me. I'll get free delivery off .co.uk site but adding up another 6/7 books on top of the one is what tips it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065528/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, Martin Sheen, Orson Welles - some big names. I think there's a sequel (book) to Catch 22 as well, but it's not as popular. Apparently when someone said to Heller that he'd never written a book as Catch 22 since then, he repleid that no-one else had either.
I've not read any other of his books - I do know that 'Catch 22' was originally called 'Catch 18' - not sure why they changed the title I might actually give the film a go, some good actors in it
Art Garfunkel's in it Great book as is 'Something Happened' by the same author. Get stuck into some Joseph Conrad. 'Nostromo' is my favourite book ever
I see you can get 'Nostromo' free if you have a kindle or on your PC etc http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nostromo-Ta...=UTF8&qid=1413896249&sr=8-1&keywords=Nostromo
Never been a big reader, it bores me. Used to read a fair few biographies, mainly footballers and inparticularly past or present Liverpool players but not read one for a while. The last one I started was Rob Jones' and I stopped half way through over a year ago now. Got two more (Rafa and Vinny Jones) waiting that I've not touched yet too.
