This was inevitably going to happen one day, all clubs should ban somersaults

    Horrible.

As the OP says, it's bound to happen that people get injured attempting things like this- though you wouldn't expect it to be fatal.
It surprises me that clubs don't do more to prevent it, tbh, given the amount of investment they have in players.

I can remember watching my son play in an under 11's match, probably 14 yrs or so ago, and the centre forward scored and then did a somersault in celebration, the manager tore a strip off him only for the parents to then have a go at the manager as their "little darling was only copying what he had seen on the TV". Imagine if he had landed badly and injured himself, I am sure the parents would have been rushing off to solicitors to sue all and sundry.

Tis true, they're footballers not gymnasts. If he'd only done one he'd still be alive now

Harsh but if we start banning everything than might cause injury or death where does it end?

Someone like nani who has a gymnastic past is unlikely yo hurt himself tbh. Some one trying it for tye first time wouldn't know how to recover it mid sault if it went wrong.

If I owned a football club and a player who the club had paid millions for celebrated by somersaulting I would have words. The risk to the club's investment is to high and the example it sets is dangerous as it can be copied by youngsters.

The same argument is why in junior rugby there are no scrums as the younger players copied the professionals collapsing the scrum to gain an advantage, trouble was at junior level the players can be very different in size and strength, resulting in a fair amount of kids becoming paraplegic's.

You ban it so that the rules are the same for everyone. So Nani can do it, however what about the player who copies it (like the guy in the OP) or a kid on a Sunday who like to copy footballers celebrations.

As terrible idea as it is Footballers are role models for kids who love to copy their favourite player. If you ban it people amateurs, who have no gymnastic background will also stop it.

Yep its harsh but needs must sometimes.

That being said they tried to stop players taking their shirts off in celebration and the moron's are still doing it. As a manager I'd be furious if my player got a fifth yellow for scoring a goal.

  10. I don't think banning it is the right step. Someone dying should be enough of a warning to players that it's dangerous. As anyone ever died or caused serious damage doing this on a pitch before?

What about Cavani getting a yellow for doing a "gun" celebration and then getting another for protesting to the ref...
someone mentioned how Robbie Keane got away with it for all these years if that is apparently a yellow card offence <doh>

Back to the OP, very sad news.

sometimes people have to be protected from themselves to avoid them doing stupid things which could seriously affect them for the rest of their lives......that's why I would not let any of my kids support Utd

Trouble is, they'll start doing it behind your back if you're too strict. They'll be sloping off in their dirty macs to watch Utd highlights in Curry's shop window and you'll find their stash of Red Army (or whatever it's called) under the bed.

  15. You can't force a child to do something, they will always go the opposite way in that instance. My eldest kept telling me he supported Chelsea. I got the reason out of him; because his friends do. Therefore, I set about my ways of planting seeds in his mind. He's now a Liverpool fan who dislikes Chelsea and Man Utd :)

My son came home from school aged about 6 and asked if he could support Utd as all the other boys at school did (small village school) as Utd were winning everything at the time. I told him he could if he wanted to, but he would not be able to live with us anymore as we were a LFC house. He went off to play in his room and later when we were eating our tea he announced that he had decided to stay supporting LFC as he did not want to leave home.

Needless to say my Mrs (am married) asked him to explain and when he did I got both barrels. He has thanked me for it since though and remains a true red. The Mrs (AM) still brings it up when we argue though. Sometimes tough love works.

  17. I said similar but did it in front of the mrs (nm) who got a stern look before being able to comment <laugh>

I may have told him a few other things about Chelsea and Man Utd that not everyone would agree with. I sincerely doubt too many Liverpool would disagree though :)

I've actually said since before they were born that my kids would be allowed to support anyone they wish so long as it wasn't Man Utd. Chelsea got added shortly after my eldest was born.

If a woman can't understand that a child needs to be protected from themselves on occasion then they are not fit to be parents.

supporting utd is like a 6 year old smoking crack. you need to cut that **** out!

I just told my boys who to support when they were too young to understand - now they're at an age to understand, they're happy with it and come to games with me. Mostly away games in London as taking the little one to Liverpool would be more hassle than it's worth. Those days will come when he's older, I've took the step son up to Anfield a few times.

Luckily the step boys real dad doesn't follow football (he's a yardie) so I had free reigns to cement my idealogy on him <ok>

Even the Mrs (nm) doesn't mind Liverpool, she came to the Emirates last year with me. Although she wont come again as all she ****ing did was talk all the way through the match <grr>

But we're a family of Liverpool fans, although the Mrs (nm) isn't that fussed. I did use the family deaths as a blackmail though, at one point I said if your uncle (bro) and Gran (mum) knew you didn't support their hometown team they'd be turning in their graves - bit naughty but it worked <ok>
