Nice to see the David Simcock trained Trade Storm make off with the G1 Woodbine International yesterday. I suppose in hindsight he had to have a big chance. The race wasn't all that deep in quality and the fact that the horse was sent across the Atlantic said heaps about his chances. And added to that, The Europeans have had a field day over there of late. Jamie Spencer settled the horse well off the pace and then took the short cut home. They set a nice solid pace throughout which according to Spencer, played to Trade Storm's strengths. It seem Sheikh Fahad saw the animal win in Dubai, liked what he saw and bought him. Hats off to all concerned.
Was supposed to be going to Ponte races today but them plans have fallen through so instead done a Placepot and EW 63: 2:10 - Phyllis Maud 4/1 2:40 - Devious Spirit 2/1 3:10 - Best Trip 12/1 3:40 - Natural Charm 15/2 4:10 - The New Pharaoh 8/1 4:40 - Hell Hath No Fury 7/1
I have nothing to say I was simply feeling sorry for such a low achieving daily thread with only 3 posts. Can someone invite Arkle back, that would soon sort out these sparse threads?
Know he's been all around town, Nass, thought I saw something where he was on Twitter. Mistaken, I guess.
A question - Do you guys think Champions Day was a good display of British flat racing? I seem to get slaughtered by some on twitter for my views on it.
Was the champion 3yo miler in attendance - no Was the champion 3yo filly in attendance - no Was the champion 3yo middle distance horse in attendance -no Was the champion sprinter in attendance - no Was the champion older horse in attendance - not sure we have one Therefore I don't believe it displayed British Flat racing at its peak
The card itself I would put as a good card but certainly not a card which could be labelled a day of showcasing Champions. The first day of Royal Ascot was likely the best card of the flat season and beat this one hands down. The day itself was spoiled by the ground to a large extent as flat racing is not meant for soft or heavy going as it's about explosive speed, tight manoeuvres through closing and opening gaps, not about outstaying the competition over such distance as 6f-8f. The day as a spectacle itself I feel was saved by a really touching story of Lady Cecil and Noble Mission, this did bring a tear to the eye with a very brave horse outreaching all he had done before with a never say die performance under the Cecil name and in the colours of Frankel. Should Al Kazeem have won however then it would have been hard to make an argument for the day being any kind of a success. As it was I think everyone went home happy due to Noble Mission and so it was not a failure but hardly a showcasing of champions. I would go along with those that believe it's always Russian roulette staging what is supposed to be the biggest card of the year in mid October, I would stage it in Early September, it could be built around the King George but the concept would need changing as obviously the champions are still establishing themselves at that time.
Who is this Arkle that keeps getting a mention, I've noticed the name crop up on a few of the threads?
SL advises "Aidan O'Brien has six of the 13 entries in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday." Think he must be trying to win it. Can just hear him "............now listen, these are the six best horses I've ever trained."
