Here we are then; with 64 sides just one win away from the First Round Proper and the possibility of a trip to the likes of Sheffield Utd or Bristol City (or Pompey!). Greenwich Borough have taken over the mantle after seeing off Redhill 1-0. Borough are the joint lowest ranked team remaining [level 9] along with Willand Rovers and Shildon. Their reward is an away tie at Worcester City. Focus on Worcester City: League: Conference North, 3 divisions higher up the pyramid than Greenwich. Ground: Currently Ground Sharing at Kidderminster's Aggborough - capacity 6,250 (3,140 seated) Worcester's Cup Run so far: 2nd Qualifying Round Worcester 3-1 Rugby Town 3rd Qualifying Round Leamington 1-1 Worcester replay Worcester 2-0 Leamington Best Cup Run In 1958-59 they reached the Fourth Round, knocking out Liverpool in the Third [although Liverpool were in the Second Division {Championship} at the time]. In their Fourth Round Tie they achieved their highest ever attendance; 17,042 for the visit of Second Division Sheffield Utd. They last got past this stage in 2005-06, when they went out to Huddersfield in Round Two. In 1979-80 they were founder members of the Alliance League [now the Conference] Random Fact Former Manager George Armstrong made 500 appearances for Arsenal between 1961 and 1977
Come on Basingstoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worcester is a lovely place, one of Cricket's best grounds at New Road, with the Cathedral in the background and the river passing by. please log in to view this image Worcester City's old ground reminds me of Waterlooville's Jubilee Park. please log in to view this image
Ties are next weekend so I expect the draw will be on Monday 27th. I remember Jubilee Park as I was taken there regularly as a youngster in the 70s. We always used to stand close to the dug-outs, by the entrance to the "Grandstand". I seem to recall it was an extra 30p to sit there. The teams didn't come out onto the pitch together. The away side always came out first, with the normal dreary background music playing on the tannoy. Then the Match of the Day theme - long version - would pipe up to greet the Waterlooville players. Other Hampshire teams: Basingstoke are at home to Harrow Borough (Isthmian Premier) Eastleigh are away to fellow Conference side Kidderminster Gosport Borough are away to Willand Rovers of the Western League Premier Division [3 steps down the pyramid] Aldershot are at home to Torquay Utd
Come on Basingstoke, you have a chance to do this!!!! Talking of entry music, if you ever want to hear Mike Oldfield, you should come to a Portsmouth Ladies game. They come out to it, at least when they're not at Furze Lane (as I don't think there's a tannoy there), but at Cams Alder. One game last season we came out to Park Life by Blur, it's not Mike Oldfield but I quite liked that, seemed quite fitting somehow. Even if I can barely make it out due to the loudness of the crowd (one disadvantage with the Fratton End, hard to hear the music!)
I used to go to Jubilee Park frequently when I lived in Purbrook, in the days of Dave Munks and Jim Storrie playing for the 'Ville, after leaving Pompey. Happy days !
